DermatophytePathology
  • These fungi infect the keratinized tissues, nail,
    hair and stratum corneum.
  • Nail bed infections are difficult to cure
  • Natural infection is usually by direct or
    indirect contact with carrier animals.
  • The organism can survive in the environment for
    an extended period of time.
  • Young animals are more susceptible than adults.

  • Skin lesions begin as focal, round alopecic
    (hairless) areas. The lesions later can become
    thickened, reddened and depigmented.
  • The lesions generally are not puritic (itchy)
  • Seen more commonly in hot, humid climates.
  • Often seen where tack touches horses skin
