Title: Conducting a Survey
1Conducting a Survey
COURSE 3 LESSON 11-7
Tell whether or not the following surveys are
random samples. Describe the population of the
samples.
a. To find out how often students in your school
go to movies, you select names at random
from the school directory to interview.
This is a random sample.
The population is the students in your school.
b. A country radio station asks listeners to call
in and give their favorite song.
This is not a random sample.
The views of the people who listen to the radio
station may not represent the views of all
country music fans or all radio listeners. The
population is country music fans who listen to
the radio station.

2Conducting a Survey
COURSE 3 LESSON 11-7
To find the number of tourists in your town, you
interview people who are going into the public
library. Tell whether this is a good sample and,
if so, name the method of sampling used.
This sample may not include many tourists because
tourists are not likely to go the public library.
It is not a good sample because it is not taken
from the population you want to study.
