2Introduction
- Abraham Darby III built the first iron bridge in
Shropshire in England. Born in 1750, he joined
the ironworks when he was just 18 followed by his
brother two years later. Achieving his life long
dream of building the first iron bridge in the
world Abraham Darby III died in 1779.
3Unusual facts
Abraham Darby and his family had no pictures
taken of them because of their Quaker religion
although there appears to be a silhouette of a
face on one of the joints of the bridge. Maybe
Abraham Darby Created it himself so that people
would know what he looked like in years to come.
Abraham Darby also has a rose named after
him. Breeder David Austin (UK) 1985 Breeding
Yellow Cushion x Aloha Large shrub with many
petalled flowers of apricot to yellow. Strong and
disease resistant. Fragrant.

This is where the Iron Bridge is, it was built in
1779. It was his most famous bridge and it was
the largest cast iron structure of the time. The
bridges fame made the village of Ironbridge,
Shropshire to grow around it, with the area being
named Ironbridge Gorge.
