Manual Resuscitators

• Are devices incorp. a selfinflating bag and a
  non-rebreathing valve mechanism
• Provides manually applied positive pressure to
  the airways
• Used in emergency situations, for suctioning, and
  for transport
• Patient valve has a standard 22 - 15 mm connector
• Sometimes called AMBU bag

Recommendations for a bag-mask unit

• Self-refilling bag that is easily cleaned and
  sterilized (if reusable)
• Non-sticking valve system at 15 L/M
• Non-rebreathing valve system
• Can have pop-off valve or not
• Standard 15/22 mm adapter
• Provide up to 100 O2 at high stroke volumes and
  rates
• Available in adult, pediatric, infant

Hazards of manual resuscitators

• Leaks around mask or tracheal tube may prevent
  proper lung inflation
• Improperly functioning equipment due to missing
  parts, improper assembly
• Poor ventilation technique by operator
• Failure to recognize and properly handle tension
  pneumo., aspiration, or acute episodes of hypoxia

Gas - Powered Resuscitators

• Usually pressure-limited units and may be used as
  demand valves
• Can be time cycled or pressure cycled
• Provide instantaneous flow rates of at least 100
  L/M
• Have an insp. press. relief valve that opens at
  50 cm H2O
• Provides 100 O2
• Has standard 15/22 mm adapter
