Title: William Sidney Mount

1
William Sidney Mount
An American Artist, Musician, Inventor, the
Era and people of his life
1807 - 1868
compiled by Pamela Justin Small
for William Sidney Mount Elementary School
of Stony Brook, New York in honor of his 200th
Birthday celebration on November 26,
2007

the United States of America, and the man
responsible for the Louisiana Purchase is shown

Setauket To Stony Brook
The First Presbyterian Church of Setauket, on the
Village Green. Mount first lived across from this
village Green at his first residence in Setauket
(near the site of the present day Emma S. Clark
Library).
Hawkins-Mount House, Stony Brook, New York
Now Then
Built in 1725 and made bigger in 1757 by Eleazer
Hawkins. Jonas Hawkins turned it into a tavern
when he took it over in the late 1700s. It was
then called Jonas Hawkins Store and Ordinary.
Jonas Hawkins was also a messenger for the Culper
Spy Ring. William lived here until he was 17.
When his mother passed on, he inherited part of
the house making a studio on the very top floor
complete with skylights. Although part owner and
a frequent visitor, Mount never made this or
anywhere else a permanent residence.

Eel Spearing at Setauket
Eel Spearing at Setauket a study in Greek
Revival?
Considered one of the classics in the history of
American art because it is both a beautiful and a
significant painting. First is its formal beauty,
the serene clarity of its composition, organized
around its multiple pairings and reflectionsThe
structure is classical, consisting mainly of
stable horizontals and verticals, along with the
dominant triangle formed by paddle, boat and
fishing spear, reminiscent of a Greek revival
pediment dominant in American architecture at the
time. The boat is centered in the near ground,
parallel both to the picture plane and to the
shoreline behind. In its solid volume and
monumental stance the standing figure recalls the
spirit of Greco-Roman statuary, such as that of
the spear bearer. (Mount could have seen casts of
ancient sculpture in his years of study in New
York.) But the stillness, harmony and sense of
equipoise are also an expression of natures hold
on the American imagination in the mid-19th
century, the countrys self-confident spirit, and
Mounts personal celebration of memory and
meditation   - John Wilmerding,
the Wall Street Journal
The boy in this painting is Thomas Shepard Strong
4th, with a housekeeper Rachel Holland Hart.
5
The Culper Spy Ring
The Culper Spy Ring of Setauket
the stuff
books are made of.
George Washingtons image on a Quarter. He was
our first president and the man responsible for
leading our country towards independence. Mount
heard first hand tales of his exploits from a
friend who fought in the Revolutionary war and
the Battle of Setauket.
6
Great-Grand-Fathers Tale of the Revolution A
Portrait of Reverend Zachariah Greene

A local Hero!
Zachariah Greene was a minister for the Setauket
Presbyterian Church and shared an era with George
Washington. He was a patriot soldier in the
Revolutionary war and also fought in the "Battle
of Setauket".
Mount was a realist painter, and thus painted the
six fingers of Reverend Zachariah Greene.
7
Rustic Dance After a Sleigh Ride
Rustic Dance After a Sleigh Ride a genre first!
This was Mounts first genre painting done in
1830. It was an immediate success and he kept to
this genre style henceforth.
8
Bar-room Scene
Bar-room Scene a comment on social issues.
Mounts paintings often commented on American
social and political issues. In this painting he
explores temperance, alcohol abuse, and the
abolition of slavery.
Although illegible here, the sign posted on the
back wall, is a temperance notice. All are amused
by the drunks behavior including the man of
color who is standing apart from the others. He
is a free man who is joining the fun but is also
socially separated. The dancing mans tattered
jacket and belongings on the floor depict him
clearly as a drunkard, the ax representing the
punishment at this time for drunken behavior,
which was cutting down trees on public lands.
9
Cider Making
Cider Making all about politics!
A close up of the barrel shows a date that
reflects the presidential election of 1840.
William Henry Harrison siding with the common
man, said that he preferred log cabins and hard
cider, as opposed to Martin Van Burens excesses
in the current democratic White House.
The cider mill immortalized in this painting
stood in Setauket, Long Island, until early in
the twentieth century.

California News (News from the Gold Diggings
Reading the Tribune), 1850. William Sidney
Mount Oil on canvas, 21 /8 x 20 ¼. The
Museums at Stony Brook, Stony Brook, Long Island.

Captured here is the excitement of this time felt
nation wide. The girl is Mounts niece, Maria
Seabury, with her brother Tom Seabury standing
next to her (his sister Ruths children). It is
believed that Mount painted himself in the right
foreground of this picture and the boy is his
nephew, William Shepard Mount (who is later
captured as a spy during the Civil War and freed
with the help of William Sidney). Behind Mount is
a local landowner, Philip Longbothum and the man
of color is believed to be Abner Mills. The man
standing in the center with the tall hat is
Shaler Hawkins a Stony Brook sea captain.

Undutiful Boys
Undutiful Boys nostalgic humor.
This painting was commissioned by Luman Reed, a
New York art collector with farm boy beginnings
himself. This was painted on the Mount Farm in
Stony Brook. Many of Mounts pieces featured the
Mount barn.

A close up that shows the detail and coloring.
The Power of music! 1847 William Sidney Mount
Oil on canvas, 14 5/8 x 18 5/8" Cleveland
Museum of Art.
Although a love of music connects the figures and
briefly heals the social divisions of race, the
middle-aged man remains hidden, still outside the
barn door. A reflection of the era, the
unresolved racial issues so eloquently portrayed
in Mount's painting still resonate today.
15
Dance of the Haymakers
Dance of the Haymakers
inspired by the music of a cousin.
Ever hear of Shep Jones Lane in Stony Brook? Shep
Jones was Mounts cousin. This painting was
inspired by a song he wrote, Shep Jones
Hornpipe. He also painted Shep Jones as the
fiddler in this picture. His son Henry Floyd
Jones identified the others in this painting as
Tom Briggs (dancer left), Wesley Ruland (dancer
right), Horace Newton (behind Shep Jones), Billy
Brigss (left front), Joe Jayne (behind him), the
woman in the background was known as Aunt Mary
(a cook or housekeeper for Mounts sister Ruth),
and the boy with the rhythm sticks was Mathias
(apprentice to Shep Jones).

The Pipe of FriendshipRail Shooting
Finishing up for a friend
William Tylee Ranney died in 1857. William
Sidney Mount completed these works for Ranney in
1859 at the request of his widow.
Mount often depicted figures of contrasting ages,
genders, and races to highlight themes of social
exclusion. The sympathetic individuality of the
servant in Rail Shooting, as well as the less
robust nature of his form, are typical of Mounts
treatment, suggesting this figure is largely his
work.

Commission.' W.S. M.-"
Mount donated this painting for an auction
benefiting the Union Army during the Civil War.
This seemingly simple still life, one of the very
few he did, is packed with symbolism. A tin cup
called a dipper, which was commonly used by the
military in the Civil War and could be seen
hanging from every soldiers belt or saddle
during a march, infuses his painting with
contemporary relevance. Like his genre scenes,
which he encoded with political meaning, this
seemingly spare portrayal of two tin cups, one
new and the other worn and tarnished, with two
recently plucked apples, a fingernail imprint
visible in the one in the foreground, can be
interpreted as a celebration of American
identity. Mount transformed the humble apple,
called our national fruit by American writer
Ralph Waldo Emerson, and the utilitarian drinking
cup of the Union soldier into symbols of pride
representing the simple but powerful qualities of
American life.
18
Cradle of Harmony
Cradle of Harmony a musician Inventor too!
A violin with a concave back invented and
patented by William Sidney mount in 1857. This
violin was designed to play music louder than
traditional violins, a desired feature at barn
dances where the music often was too soft for the
crowd and other instruments.

His Resting Place
At Home to Rest among other Long Island
heroes
William Sidney Mounts final resting place is
appropriately at the Setauket Presbyterian Church
across from where he was born. Hundreds of people
come each year to this grave yard, not just for
him, and not out of any sense of morbid
fascination, but to walk among history and see
for themselves the early heroes and builders of
Long Island and of a young America.
