Coin Mints
  • Long ago, coins were made out of precious metals
like gold and silver. Today, coins are usually
    made out of other metals.
  • When mints make coins today, they are not made of
gold or silver. They are made from a mixture of
copper and nickel, called an alloy. These metals
are cheaper and more available than the other
    precious metals.
  • To make them, the metal is melted and poured into
molds to make bars or ingots. Machines roll the
ingots into sheets. Blanks for each type of coins
are punched out from the sheets. They are then
put through an edge-rolling machine, which
produced a raised rim or an edge on each coin.
Finally, the designs are stamped onto both sides
    at the same time.
  • All coins made in the United States have two
sayings stamped on them. One of them is "E
Pluribus Unum" - Latin for "Out of many, one."
The other saying is "In God We Trust." When the
coins are finished, they are counted and weighed
and sent in bags to banks.
