  • Importance of asking questions
  • Make questions based on headings, subheadings and
    bold words
  • Reread what you dont understand
  • Look up new words (dictionary, glossary)
  • Make a picture (visualize) what you are reading
  • Restate the ideas in your own words
  • Take notes, annotate, highlight, use sticky notes
    (page 15- 16)

Two Column Notes
  • Read the selection.
  • Go back and find the main ideas. Use headings to
    help you.
  • Write the main ideas on the left-hand side of a T
    chart.
  • On the right-hand side, use bullets to list the
    subtopics and details you want to remember.

  • Make sure you answered your original questions
  • Connect new information with prior knowledge
    (text to text, text to self, text to world, text
    to movie, text to another person)
  • Write about what you have read
  • Review notes often

VIPs and Sum It Up
  • Highlight three VIPs (very important points).
  • Create an A B C topic sentence.
  • A identify the text by its title and author
  • B select a strong verb (do not use is or was)
  • C finish your thought with the big idea
  • Now add on your three VIPs. Be sure to write them
    as complete sentences. Use transition words to
    increase sentence fluency.
