Title: La Rambla
1La Rambla
Barcelona's old city is, without doubt, one of
the nicest and most romantic of Europe. Its small
streets, shops, the air you breathe, everything
invites you to wander around, getting to know
every place of this charming area.RAMBLA is, of
course, the best known landmark of Barcelona, and
deservedly so. Meandering down from the Pl. de
Catalunya to the Columbus statue, filled with
newspaper kiosks, flower and animal stalls, and
all sorts of artists, it is undoubtedly the place
where everyone comes together, both tourists and
locals. Find the Miró Mosaic, the Liceu (Opera
house), the Mercat de la Boqueria or exhibition
centres such as the Palau de la Virreina and the
Centre d'Art Santa Mònica. Strolling down the
Rambla, on your right is the Barri del Raval,
formerly known as the "barrio chino", the
red-light district of the city. In Calle
Montalegre you'll find the Centre de Cultura
Contemporània de Barcelona. Further down the
Ramblas, in Calle Nou de la Rambla, is the Palau
Güell, by Gaudí. You should not miss Pl. Reial,
on your left, with its archway and palm trees
(some say the tallest of Europe).

8Barri Gòtic
The Barri Gòtic is the centre of Barcelona, where
the city originated, and where the main public
buildings are located the Palau de la
Generalitat, the Town Hall, the Cathedral, the
Palau Reial. In the higher area of Mons Táber, a
hill where the ancient Roman city originated,
behind the current Plaça de Sant Jaume, was the
forum, with the administrative buildings of the
city.

16La Plaça de Sant Jaume
Since antiquity it has always been the political
and social centre of the city with the two most
important buildings of the Catalan
administration, the Generalitat de Catalunya and
the Town Hall (Ajuntament) of Barcelona. This
Square has witnessed the most important events of
the recent history of Catalonia, the proclamation
of the Catalan State in 1931, the return from
exile of Josep Tarradellas in 1977 and the
celebration of the titles of F.C Barcelona with
its fans crowded in the square. .

20La Plaça del Rei
This is the most handsome section of ancient
Barcelona. It is a square outlined by gothic
buildings toped by the facade of the former main
Royal Palace and its watchtower- a true
skyscraper for the 16th Century. The Plaça del
Rei ( the King Square) is the most noble urban
space of old Barcelona. On this majestic square
stand some of the important medieval buildings of
the city the Palau Reial Mayor which contains
the exquisite Saló Tinell banqueting hall, the
Chapel of Santa Agatha and the Palau de
Lloctinent.

26Catedral de Barcelona Plaza de la Seu
Situated on the site of a Paleochristian
basilica. Construction began during the
Romanesque period but was finally completed
during the Gothic period, which is the dominant
style. The outside of the building is sombre,
decorated only with the vertical buttresses. The
door of San Ivo is representative of the
so-called Catalan Gothic. The interior naves are
at nearly the same height, which causes the
impression of being in a single site. The lateral
chapels have an upper gallery, providing the
premises with greater light and openness. The
dome base is covered on the inside with
handcrafted woodwork. The main façade was built
recently (late 19th century, early 20th century),
although based on a project from 1408. The door
from the cloister to the cathedral and the chapel
of Santa Lucía are of great interest.
