• The East was the source of valuable goods, such
  as spices, gold, silks and precious stones

• Europeans wanted to spread their religion,
  Christianity to other peoples
• Many ambitious sea captains wanted to become
  famous
• New technology made it possible to travel across
  vast unknown seas, such as the astrolabe and the
  caravel ship.
