Story
  • Prometheus was put in charge of creating man by
Zeus. So he created men. (No women yet.)
  • Prometheus become fond of his creation and wanted
against Zeus wishes to give them diving
    knowledge and fire.
  • He stole fire from Zeus lighting and gave it to
    the men.
  • Zeus made the men have animal sacrifices.
Prometheus wanted to let man eat meat so he took
the sacrificed animal parts and put them in 2
packets. One was filled with ox meat and guts
wrapped in stomach lining, the other was ox bones
wrapped in fat. He presented them to Zeus, asking
him to pick which one he liked best. Zeus picked
the ox bones since they appeared richer.
Prometheus gave the meat to man and they were now
allowed to eat meat but had to sacrifice burnt
    bones to Zeus.

Story cont.
  • When Zeus learned what Prometheus did, he was
enraged that he was tricked. So he responded by
creating Pandora, the first woman. Zeus presented
her to Prometheus brother Epimetheus as his
    bride.
  • Prometheus (being the god of forethought) that
Zeus would want revenge. He warned his brother
(the god of afterthought) about accepting gifts
from Zeus. Zeus also gave Epimetheus a box with a
note saying to never open it. Epimetheus was so
attracted to Pandora that he forgot his brothers
warning and took the box and married Pandora.
  • One day while Epimetheus was not home, Pandora
saw the box and opened it. This unleashed all the
evils of man, who could now become sick and had
to work all day instead of lounge about.
  • Zeus hoped Prometheus would obey him because of
this, but he continued to defy him. So Zeus told
Hephaestus to chain Prometheus to Mount Caucasus,
and then an eagle would fly up and peck out his
    regenerating liver once a day.
  • Hercules eventually rescued Prometheus, and
    Prometheus served the human Deucalion.
