Topics of the Presentation
  • Introduction
  • ACSS
  • Model formulation for Solid Waste Collection
    Optimization
  • Use of GIS in solid waste management
  • Objective of Term Project

1. Introduction
  • ACSS
  • ½ of the Citys population solid waste service
    provider
  • Provides service for commercial residential
customer for both recyclable and disposable solid
    wastes.
  • Provides both stationary container and hauled
    container services
  • Offloading sites TDS, BFI, MRF,Hornsby Bend,
    COA Landfill
  • Model of the optimization
  • Input Data
  • Source location
  • Transportation street networks
  • Transportation route length between pick-up
    locations
  • Waste generation data at pickup location
  • Location of offloading sites
  • Analysis (optimization)
  • Use linear modeling
  • Minimize collection cost by considering the
collection distance( route) and collection time
  • Constraints regulation, traffic loads, and
working hours, truck capacity, and other
    conditions. Types of collection system
  • Output
  • Optimum collection route
  • Collection time
  • Minimum cost

  • Use of GIS in solid waste management
  • 2. Objective of the Term Project
  • Investigating the existing capacity of Arc View
GIS tools for optimizing citys solid waste
    collection system
  • To use the existing Arc View tools for
    preliminary route optimization
  • 3. Computer Data Acquisition preparation
  • Customer locations
  • Austin City Street network
  • Offloading and Office locations
  • Identifying Commercial, residential and
    recyclable customers and hauled container
    collection system services

6. Conclusion
  • The existing Spatial and Network analyst tools
have limited application in Citys solid waste
    collection system optimization
  • The existing tools are suitable for hauled
container collection system than the stationary
    container system
  • Improved tools or integration of additional
linear models to include all the factors that may
affect the collection system is necessary
  • The existing tools may be helpful for locating
transfer stations and landfill sites for new
    collection system
  • Acknowledgment
