- His father was Hanz Klee, he was a German music
teacher at a school near Berne - His mother, Ida Maria Frick, was also a musician
3Paul's Childhood
- Started both Music and Art at his young childhood
- At the age of 7, he started to play the violin
- At the age of 8, his grandmother gave him a
- box of chalk and encouraged him to draw
- In his earlier childhood he wanted to
- become a musician, but during his teen years
- he decided on the visual arts
- At the age of 19 he moved to Munich
- where he then studied art at a private
- school and at the Munich Academy
4- In 1906 he married the a pianist Lili Stumpf, and
then settled in Munich, and had one son - He then joined an expressionist group that
contributed to much of the development of
abstract art called Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue
Rider) - After WWI was over he then taught at the Bauhaus
school

- Began teaching at Dusseldorf Academy in 1931, but
he was dismissed by the Nazis, who termed his
work degenerate - In 1933, he went to Switzerland, and then there
he came down w/ the disease Scleroderma
5His Art
- His visit to Italy and Egypt both greatly
influenced his art - He worked w/ many types of media such as oil
paint, watercolor, ink, and more - Paul often combined many types of media all in to
one piece of art - Associated w/ expressionism, cubism, and
surrealism but his pictures are difficult to
classify - Most of the time, his pieces have a fragile
child-like quality, and are usually on a small
scale - He used color in a variety of unique and diverse
means - He loved the natural world so much, that it was
odd that he originally despised color - Paul did not like using color, in many of his
early projects he was forced to - Eventually he learn to work w/ color w/ great
skill and taught mixing and color theory to
students at Bauhaus
6Paul's Death
- Paul died in Muralto, Switzerland in 1940 w/o
having obtained Swiss citizenship - He died at the age of 60
- He left at least 8,926 works of art
- A museum was built in Berne, Switzerland
dedicated to him by an Italian architect, Renzo
Piano - The museum opened in June 2005 and contains about
4,000 pieces of art by Paul Klee
