  • Future Goals

15
Goals
  • Obtain recognition as one of the Top 100 High
    Schools in the nation.
  • Decrease attrition rate through increased parent
involvement and implementation of a mandatory
    tutorial policy for failing students.
  • Retention rate for the class of 2009 and 2010 has
been significantly higher than past years since
the implementation of new retention policies.
  • Develop cooperative relationship with Marshpoint
    and Coastal Middle Schools.

16
Goals (cont.)
  • Achieve IB Certification for Coastal MS
  • When Coastal MS becomes IB certified, SCCPS will
have the second PYP-MYP-DP continuum in the state
    of Georgia.
  • Continue to increase average IB SAT scores
  • Class of 2006 achieved 1168 average for
    Math/Language Arts components.
  • Increase the number of applicants through
intensive recruitment at both public and private
    middle schools, internet/website improvements,
    and aggressive local media outreach.

17
Goals (cont.)
  • Increase Diploma recipient percentages.
  • Increase participation amongst non-IB students in
    IB courses.
  • In 2006-2007, non-IB students were allowed to
take an IB 6th Subject Course.
  • 6th Subject Courses currently include
  • Visual Arts
  • Design Technology
  • Choral Music
  • Instrumental Music
  • Psychology

18
Goals (cont.)
  • Continue to advocate for the Georgia State
Legislature to provide incentives to students who
    earn the IB Diploma.
  • States with established state-wide policies
(Florida, Texas, California and Colorado) have
seen explosive growth in the number of students
who successfully complete the IB Diploma program.
  • In May 2007, Governor Perdue vetoed HB 467, which
would have forced GA colleges and universities to
accept a set amount of college credit for
students who are awarded the IB Diploma.

19
Summary
  • The Johnson High School IB Program offers a
rigorous and challenging pre-university course of
study that is recognized around the world as an
exceptional standard of excellence in education.
  • IB encourages critical thinking and exposure to a
variety of points of view to promote
    intercultural knowledge and understanding among
    students.
  • Since becoming a district-wide Specialty Program,
enrollment has doubled as students embrace this
challenging, engaging and structured approach to
    learning.
  • IB also benefits the total school program by
exposing non-IB students to its philosophy
    through the 6th Subject Course.
