  • Bottom Plate / Sole Plate
  • The bottom, horizontal structural member of a
    stud framed wall. The bottom plate sets on the
    subfloor, nails through the subfloor into floor
    joists.
  • Cripple Stud
  • Short studs placed between the header and a top
    plate or between a sill and sole plate.

  • Header
  • A beam placed perpendicular to wall suds above
    doors, windows or other openings to carry the
    weight of structural loads.
  • On Center (O.C.)
  • The term used to define the measured spacing
    between studs, joists, rafters, etc. O.C.
    measurements are taken from the center of one
    member to the center of the adjoining member.

  • The piece of structural wood forming the lower
    side of a window opening.
  • Stud
  • A 2x4 or 2x6 vertical framing member used to
    construct walls and partitions.
  • Top Plate
  • The top horizontal framing members of a framed
    wall.

  • Trimmer
  • A common stud that is placed against a window or
    door frame that supports the header
  • King Stud
  • A 2x4 that is anchored to a trimmer that supports
    the top plate
  • Double Top Plate
  • The top horizontal framing members of a framed
    wall directly above the top plate.

Rules When Framing
  • Studs must be placed 16 OC from each other
  • Studs must span the entire wall section
  • Space between trimmers when framing either a door
    or window must equal the rough dimensioning on a
    window
  • Space between header and sill when framing a
    window or space between sole plate and header
    when framing a door must equal rough dimensioning
    on door or window
