  • Engaged in combat with hostile forces
  • Killed or wounded requiring a medical evacuation
    from Iraq

Global War on Terrorism Service Medal (GWOTSM)
  • Awarded to Soldiers who have served in military
    operations to combat terrorism since
    11 September 2001
  • Automatically eligible if serving in the military
    between 11 SEP 01 and 31 MAR 04
  • After Mar 04, Battalion Commanders (award
    approval authority), must determine that a
    Soldier serving on active duty has qualified for
    the GWOTSM
  • Soldiers cannot be awarded the GWOTEM and/or
    Armed Forces Service Medal for the same period of
    time when awarded the GWOTSM

  • Awarded to Soldiers in a deployed status who have
    served in military expeditions to combat
    terrorism since 11 September 2001
  • Soldiers cannot be awarded the GWOTSM and/or
    Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for the same
    period of time when awarded the GWOTEM
  • Awarded for OEF (24OCT01-30APR05) and OIF
    (19MAR03-30APR05)
  • Eligibility
  • 30 consecutive or 60 nonconsecutive days
  • Engaged in combat with hostile forces, killed, or
    wounded requiring a medical evacuation from OEF /
    OIF

  • GWOTEM is still authorized for service in the
    other geographical areas of eligibility

    (Bourgas), Crete, Cyprus, Diego Garcia, Djibouti,
    Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Iran, Israel, Jordan,
    Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon,
    Oman, Pakistan, Philippines, Qatar, Romania
    (Constanta), Saudia Arabia, Somalia, Syria,
    Tajikistan, Turkey (east of 35 degrees east
    latitude), Turkmenistan, United Arab Emirates,
    Uzbekistan, Yemen, that portion of the arabian
    sea north of 10 degrees north latitude and west
    of 68 degrees longitude, Bab El Mandeb, Gulf of
    Aden, Gulf of Aqaba, Gulf of Oman, Gulf of Suez,
    that portion of the Mediterranean Sea east of 28
    degrees east longitude, Persian Gulf, Red Sea,
    Strait of Hormuz, and Suez Canal

  • Awarded to Soldiers who have served in the armed
    forces since 11 September 2001

Combat Action Badge (CAB)
  • Eligibility
  • May be awarded to any soldier after 18 September
    2001
  • Soldier must be performing assigned duties in an
    area where hostile fire pay or imminent danger
    pay is authorized
  • Soldier must be personally present and actively
    engaging or being engaged by the enemy, and
    performing satisfactorily in accordance with the
    prescribed rules of engagement
  • Soldier must not be assigned/attached to a unit
    that would qualify the soldier for the CIB/CMB
  • Worth 15 promotion points if awarded after
    10JUN05 IAW Milper Message 05-164
