    eliminate irritating behaviors.
  • To know when to use ignoring
  • Assess degree of potential physical harm to child
    or others.
  • Assess degree of potential damage to property.

    temper tantrums, etc.

How to Ignore
  • Discuss with your child how irritating certain
    behaviors can be. Locate these behaviors in the
    Family Rules making sure you also list the
    wanted, desirable behaviors.
  • When the behavior occurs, give the child one
    reminder, referring to the Family Rules.

How to Ignore (cont)
  • Ignoring means absolutely no attention. Do not
    look at or talk to the child. Any attention,
    even threats and criticism, will reinforce the
    behavior. Focus your attention elsewhere.
  • The behavior may continue for some time. Ignore
    the entire time. The behavior may turn worse
    before it gets better. If that happens, dont
    give up!!!
  • When the behavior stops, praise the child
    immediately.
  • When using ignoring as a technique in changing
    behavior, you do not ignore the child, you ignore
    the behavior.

Lets Have Some Fun with Role Playing!!!
  • Break into pairs.
  • One parent be the child and one parent be the
    adult.
  • Role Play using ignoring.
  • Have the child perform the undesirable behavior
    and the parent practice role playing.
  • Switch roles and do it again.
