The purpose of the ESL Program at Sojourner
Douglass College is to provide a foundation to
adult English Language Learners (ELL) to prepare
them for college. Students will receive
essentials of English grammar, conversation,
reading, and writing needed for college. Program
is designed to provide up to three levels of ESL
instruction implemented over three semesters.
2Entrance Into the ESL Program at SDC
STEPS TO APPLY (ESL CLASSES)1. Fill out a
College Application in the Admissions Office,
Baltimore Campus. (All students18 years of age or
older are eligible to take courses at Sojourner
Douglass College.)2. Fill out a Financial Aid
application on-line if you want to apply for
grants, loans or scholarships. (Students
applying for Financial Aid need a High School
diploma from their native country or the US or a
GED) Financial Information (Fill out a Financial

Interview (Call for interview dates.)4. Take
an ESL test (which places you into an ESL
level)5. Register for an ESL class (Financial
aid is available).
3TOEFL Placement Test
Students take the Test of English as a Foreign
Language (TOEFL) Test for ESL placement
level. TOEFL is a standardized test of English
language proficiency for non-native English
language speakers wishing to enroll in U.S.
colleges and universities. TOEFL test measures
the ability of non-native English speakers to use
and understand English as its read, written,
heard and spoken in the university classroom.
4TOEFL Format
The TOEFL test measures all four English-language
skills. It takes about four hours.

Beginner Level (ESL-BL1) Prerequisite Entry
into the regular College Program Catalog
Description This course provides a
foundation for college-level reading and writing
for Students in need of English as a Second
Language. It provides a study of the essentials
of English grammar, simple conversation, and
reading of English.

Course Title English as a Second Language
Beginner Level (ESL-BL2) Prerequisite
Students must be designated as ESL and complete a
proficiency exam to be placed into this
low-intermediate course level. Catalog
Description A continuation of ESL-BL1, this
course focuses on refining reading, writing and
critical thinking skills of ESL students who are
at or above the intermediate level of
developmental work. Upon completion of the
course, students will be able to draft and revise
coherent, well-developed and well-organized
paragraphs and short essays using the writing
process for class assignments.

Intermediate Level (ESL-IL3) Prerequisite
Students must be designated as ESL and complete a
proficiency exam to be placed into this
high-intermediate-low high course
level. Catalog Description A continuation
of ESL-BL2, this course focuses on refining
reading, writing and critical thinking skills of
ESL students who are above the intermediate level
of developmental work. Upon completion of the
course, students will be able to draft and revise
coherent, well-developed and well-organized short
essay and research assignments using the writing
process for class assignments.
