Some people take this information to
extremes! If I lose a little weight by
burning off more calories than I take in, then I
will lose a LOT of weight if I restrict my
calories by not eating or by throwing up the food
I eat. Hmmm..
11
Anorexia Nervosa
  • People who have anorexia have an intense fear of
gaining weight. They severely limit the amount of
food they eat and can become dangerously thin.

bingeing on food followed by purging, or throwing
    up food.

18
Bulimia Nervosa
  • Some people purge their food by throwing up, some
use laxatives. A new category includes people
    who purge calories by exercise.

Connecting Eating Disorders
  • Some people just have one of these eating
disorders, others have a combination of two or
    three disorders.
  • EXAMPLE Many people with Anorexia struggle with
restricting calories and then binge eat. Then
they struggle with guilt and throw up food,
    leading to Bulimia.

27
Exercise Bulimia is a newly recognized eating
disorder, characterized by a compulsion to purge
calories through excessive exercise. It is also
known as "compulsive exercise" or "exercise
addiction.
28
With Exercise Bulimia, sufferers feel a desire
to purge calories, but use rigorous exercise as
their method as opposed to someone with
traditional Bulimia.
29
  • Symptoms of Exercise Bulimia include
  • Inflexibility as to time of day and mode of
    exercise.
  • Exercise even when sick or injured.
  • Prioritizing exercise over social dates, family
    functions, work, or school.
  • Intense fear at states of rest.

30
  • Intense anxiety at situations where preferred
    method of exercise is unavailable.
  • Intense guilt when forced to stray from exercise
    routine.
  • Refusal to eat if unable to exercise.
