Battle for the beaches
  • Thousands of planes, ships, tanks, landing craft,
and 3.5 million troops awaited orders to attack
  • American General Dwight D. Eisenhower planned to
strike on the coast of Normandy. General Omar
Bradley led American forces at D-Day.
  • To keep Hitler guessing, the Allies set up a huge
dummy army with its own headquarters and
equipment. They ordered the make-believe army to
attack at the French seaport of Calasis
  • Code-named Operation Overlord, the invasion of
Normandy was the greatest land and sea attack.
The invasion began on June 6, 1944.

10
  • At dawn on June 6, British, American, French, and
Canadian troops fought their way onto a 60-mile
stretch of beach in Normandy. The Germans had dug
in with machine guns, rocket launchers, and
    cannons
  • Among Americans alone, 3,000 soldiers died on the
    beach that day
  • Despite heavy causalities, the Allies held the
beachheads. A month later more than 1 million
additional troops had landed and successfully cut
    through German defenses.
  • The success at Normandy turned the tide of the
war in favor of the Allies and led to the
liberation of France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and
    the Netherlands

Headline News! Summary
  • Headlines summarize the essential information in
    a story
  • Allowed to use only a few words, headlines force
editors to think of a concise way to summarize a
    lot of information.
  • What is the main idea? What do we know so far?
What is the significance of the event, discovery,
    problem, conflict, etc.?
  • News sites use summaries to give readers the most
important information, the meat of the article.
