3The Problem for Emerging Simulations
- Complex sensor, behavior societal models
- Require diverse natural environment products that
- Maintain consistency across/within simulations
and for additional participants - Consistency requires the capability to
- Conduct scenario-based searches for existing
products - Capture and track products required by each model
- Generate and distribute products
- Emerging simulations require that environment
products be provided in a manner that is - Efficient, effective and flexible while
conforming to standards

7The Provider-Consumer Connection
What happens when I add new/alternative data
sources? What is the cost? How do I validate
use?

One MS Federation today has 2 to 6 unique
consumers. Federations of tomorrow will have 10

Note Virtual Providers should be tied to /
defined by communities of CONSUMERS because the
goal is consistency across a federation of
consumers. Provider data sources should be
allowed (encouraged?!) to be inconsistent in
order to achieve highest possible fidelity.
10The Two-Part Solution
- Create and distribute the consistent Environment
Representation - Identify historical scenarios that provide
relevant conditions - Develop the Integrated Environment Representation
- Distribute through Common Open Services for
Integrated Natural Environment (COSINE) - Create and distribute the consistent individual
views/products of the Environment
Representation - Identify all views/products required by each
participant - Develop consistent views/products for the C4I,
Control Group, and Simulation domains (for
example) - Provide efficient runtime distribution with
injection of data effects

16Environment Representation in MS
- DoD Modeling Simulation (MS)
- Environment Representation defined as key success
criteria - Support focused on Training, Acquisition,
Analysis, and TE - Training Joint (JNTC), AF (DMO), Navy (FST),
Army (FCS) - MS Executive Agents
- Air and Space Natural Environment (ASNE) -
USAF/A30-W - Ocean USN/CNMOC
- Terrain NGA
- Technology Development
- MS CO (former DMSO) funded through MSEA
endorsement - Emphasis on critical enabling technology
(standards-based) - In general everything you see here is DoD owned
- DATA and MODEL resources separated from technology
17Summary
- Problem
- Provide the diverse natural environment products
required by complex models of sensors, behavior
and societal models. - Maintain consistency of natural environment
representation across/within simulations and with
additional participants. - Two-part solution
- Provide integrated consistent 4D environment
representation (ESG), including web-based
distribution. - Provide consistent environment views/products of
environment representation to all participants
(EDCSS), including runtime distribution of data
and effects. - Constraints
- Meet requirements and maintain standards.
- Be efficient, effective, and extensible.
