    Program Goals

2
Educators say
  • I have a second grader who is an ESOL student and
has progressed well in second grade with reading,
but she seemed to really flourish with much more
confidence after working with the program
    volunteer.

3
Program Goals
  • The goal of the Read2Succeed 1st Grade Vocabulary
Enhancement program is to improve vocabulary
proficiency for at-risk first graders in the
    district.
  • We expected to serve 400 students in elementary
schools throughout the district, including but
not limited to, Title I schools during the
    2014-2015 school year.
  • The goal of the Read2Succeed 2nd Grade Fluency
program is to improve reading fluency for at-risk
second graders in Orange County public schools.
  • We expected to serve 600 students in elementary
schools throughout the district, including but
not limited to, Title I schools during the
    2014-2015 school year.

4
Educators say.
  • I hope these volunteers will return next year! It
has been a wonderful experience for me and for my
students. I saw lots of improvement in my
    students.

5
Program Results
  • The Read2Succeed 1st Grade Vocabulary Enhancement
Program had great success in its second full
year. During the 2014-2015 school year, the
program served 395 students in 55 schools. Last
school year, the program served 336 students in
    45 schools.

6
Program Results
  • The Read2Succeed 2nd Grade Fluency Program had
continued success this past year serving 523
students in 50 schools compared to 526 students
    in 42 schools last year.

Program Results First Grade Vocabulary
Enhancement Program
  • Vocabulary pre-test/post-test scores evaluated
the programs success for the first set of 6
books and the second set of 6 books. The
vocabulary instruments are a simple list of the
vocabulary words chosen from each book in the
sets. Volunteers asked children to respond with
a definition or an example of each word.
  • The pre-test and posttest results for the first
set of books showed an average of 52 points on
the pre-test to an average of 109 points on the
posttest. This is an increase of 57 points from
pre-test to posttest. 206 students or 52.15 of
students scores were available for this
    measurement.
  • The pre-test and posttest results for the second
set of books showed an average of 41 points on
the pre-test to an average of 103 points on the
posttest. This is an increase of 62 points from
pre-test to posttest. 94 students or 23.8 of
students scores were available for this
    measurement.

Program Results 2nd Grade Fluency Program
  • We evaluated the program through teacher and
    volunteer surveys. Additionally, we collected
the initial score for Correct Words Per Minute
(CWPM) and the corresponding passage number. We
then collected the ending CWPM score and
corresponding passage number. The results are
    highlighted below
  • The initial passage number for all students is
the very first passage in the series, passage
    101. The average score was 69 CWPM.
  • The ending passage number varied by student.
Nearly 27 of students had an ending passage in
the first grade level and 73 had an ending
passage in the 2nd grade level.
  • The ending average score for CWPM was 101 which
represent an increase of 32 CWPM from the
    pre-test to the post-test.
  • The scores were collected from 320 students or
61.19 of the students participating in the
    program.

9
Educators say.
  • I started signing students up for this
opportunity a few years ago and ever year my
students have participated I have seen
significant growth from those students. Sometimes
students just need that personalized time out of
the classroom. It also gives them an opportunity
to feel special. I will definitely continue to
use this program as long as it is offered to my
    students!
