World Leaders Have U. N. Meeting

President Obama was the first in a line of
speakers from the big powers scheduled to speak
at the 70th annual session of the United Nations
General Assembly, where the Syria conflict, the
spread of Islamic State jihadism, and the surge
of refugees into Europe were dominant themes.
Leaders of the 193 member nations met at the UN
Headquarters in New York City on Monday. The
General Assembly meets in regular yearly sessions
to discuss various issues and address world
concerns. The general debates and discussions
can last weeks. This years General Debate of the
70th Session will take place from 28 September -
6 October.

  • Water still flows across the surface of Mars from
time to time, NASA scientists said Monday in
revealing a potential breakthrough in both the
search for life beyond Earth and human hopes to
one day travel there. This is not the first
discovery of water on Mars. Researchers have
known for many years that Mars has water frozen
at its poles, in its thin atmosphere, and, most
recently, in tiny puddles that appear to form at
night on the surface. Nor is it the first
potential clue that Mars could have once -- or
may still -- host life. The Mars Curiosity rover,
for instance, has detected methane on the surface
of Mars, as well as other chemical signatures
suggesting the possibility of past or present
life. It remains to be seen whether the new
discovery improves the odds of life on Mars, but
researcher Mary Beth Wilhelm said the results
suggest "more habitable conditions on the near
surface of Mars than previously thought.
  • Erik Roner, an extreme athlete whose feats were
seen regularly on MTV and Outside Television,
died Monday in a parachuting accident. Witnesses
told the Placer County Sheriff's Office that
Roner was participating in a group skydive at the
Squaw Valley Institute's annual Celebrity Golf
Tournament. One of the skydivers impacted a tree
while attempting to land and became entangled
with the tree high above the ground," the office
said. "Rescue personnel were able to remove the
skydiver from the tree however, he was
    pronounced deceased at the scene."
