Title: FOLLIES AROUND THE WORLD
1FOLLIES AROUND THE WORLD
2WHAT IS A FOLLY? In architecture, a folly is a
building constructed primarily for decoration.
In the original use of the word, these buildings
had no other use, but from the 19th-20th
centuries the term was also applied to highly
decorative buildings which had secondary
practical functions such as housing, sheltering
or business usage.

17- The Basket Building - United StatesLocated in
Newark, Ohio, the basket building is the home
office of the Longaberger Basket Company. Founder
Dave Longaberger decided he wanted the corporate
home office in a giant basket, and so he achieved
his dream in December 1997. The following year,
the Longaberger home office also received a Build
Ohio Award for its synthetic plaster system the
building is made of stucco over a steel
structure, which helps create the look of an
actual Longaberger Basket.
18The Shoe House - South AfricaOne of many
shoe-shaped houses in the world, the South
African shoe house, in Mpumalanga Province, was
built in 1990 by entrepreneur and artist Ron Van
Zyl, a South African artist and hotelier who
built the strange building at his wife's request.
The interior is a museum of rock and wood
carvings made by Van Zyl himself. The Shoe is
part of a bigger project, which includes a camp
site and a chalet guest house, restaurant, bar,
pool and shop.

24- The Upside Down House is a project created by a
Polish businessman and philanthropist named
Daniel Czapiewski, and is located in Poland in
the tiny village of Szymbark, and here are a few
pics with this house. Rather than simply being a
bizarre tourist attraction this house, managed to
attract thousands of tourists. The house is also
meant to be a profound statement about the
Communist era and the state of the world.
Czapiewskis company would normally take three
weeks to construct a house, but this one took 114
days because the workers were disorientated by
the strange angles of the walls. Many tourists
who visit complain of mild seasickness and
dizziness after just a few minutes of being in
the structure. Now lets take a look at some
pictures with this house

29- Skate shaped house
- My daughters love to figure skate. I found this
picture and I just asked one of them if she would
like to live in this house. She said she would
not. I said it looks like a figure skate. She
said it looks like a shoe. My husband thinks it
is a boot. I still say it is a skate. No matter
what it is, it is an interesting house. I think
it would be fun to stay there for a night or two. -
