Title: GLAST Telescope NetworkArchiving System

1
GLAST Telescope Network Archiving System
  • Tim Graves
  • Gordon Spear
  • Lynn Cominsky
  • SSU EPO Team

2
The Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope
  • A NASA facility-class mission scheduled for
    launch in 2006.
  • Large Area Telescope
  • Burst Alert Telescope
  • Will observe
  • Active Galactic Nuclei
  • Gamma Ray Bursts
  • Diffuse background emission

3
Swift Gamma Ray Burst Satellite
  • A NASA mission scheduled for launch in September
    2003
  • Burst Alert Telescope (BAT)
  • Ultraviolet/Optical Telescope (UVOT)
  • X-ray Telescope (XRT)
  • Will observe gamma-ray bursts in three parts of
    the EM Spectrum

4
Active Galactic Nuclei
  • Galaxies with massive black holes in the center
  • Gravity is so strong inside its event horizon
that not even light can escape

5
Gamma-ray Bursts
  • Largest explosion since the Big Bang
  • A billion trillion times the energy from the Sun
  • Signals the birth of a black hole

6
The GLAST Telescope Network
  • A series of institutional and amateur grade
telescopes designed for use by public school
students in collaboration with GLAST scientists.
  • All telescopes are 100 accessible from the
    internet.
  • All data is being archived at the Stanford Linear
Accelerator Center (SLAC), currently the largest
    known database in the world.

7
The GTN Prototype Telescope here at SSU
  • A 14 Celestron Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope.
  • Paramount ME Telescope mount.
  • High-resolution low- noise Apogee CCD.

8
The GTN at Kitt Peak National Observatory
  • We are here!

9
Robotically Controlled Telescope (RCT)
  • 1.3 meter telescope
  • 4 megapixel CCD
  • 1/3 of all its time is dedicated to observe
Active Galactic Nuclei (major GLAST objective)

10
Archive Development Here at SSU
11
The GTN Archive Client and Server
  • Developed in Java 2 v.1.4.1.
  • 100 platform independent.
  • Features
  • Automatic FITS header format
  • FITS header validation
  • Manual and automatic upload mode
  • SSL Encrypted Connection
  • Future elimination of client/server protocol
    needs with RMI.
  • Server
  • Receives the data from the client and inserts it
    into the SLAC Database.
  • Client
  • Interface for user
  • Filter for poorly formatted data
