Title: George Orwell

1
George Orwell
  • Eric Arthur Blair (June 1903 January 1950), pen
nameGeorge Orwell, was an English novelist and
journalist. His work is marked by clarity,
intelligence and wit, awareness of social
    injustice, opposition to totalitarianism (the
state holds total authority over the society),
    and belief in democratic socialism
  • Born in India. He was educated at Eton (public
boarding school near Windsor), served with the
Indian Imperial Police in Burma (Asia), and
worked in Britain as a private tutor,
    schoolteacher, and journalist.

Imperialism
  • Imperialism when powerful countries seek to
extend their authority beyond their own borders.
    Creation of an empire.
  • Political, economical, military domination of one
    country over another
  • Imperialist countries always aim to create a
    bigger empire.
  • Colonialism is a term where a country conquers
and rules over other regions. Imperialism means
creating an empire, expanding into the
neighboring regions and expanding its dominance
    far.

Summary of S.A.E.
  • The essay describes the experience of the English
narrator, possibly Orwell himself, called upon to
shoot an aggressive elephant while working as a
police officer in Burma (SE Asia). Because the
locals expect him to do the job, he does so
against his better judgment, his anguish
increased by the elephant's slow and painful
    death.
  • The story is regarded as a metaphor for British
imperialism, and for Orwell's view that "when the
white man turns tyrant it is his own freedom that
    he destroys.
  • Not known if fact or fiction. Wiki

2nd AP Exam Essay What is a Rhetorical Analysis?
  • Purpose - explain how an author uses rhetorical
    strategies to make his argument.
  • Your claim needs to be about the author's
argument AS WELL AS about rhetorical strategies
  • Don't try to analyze all the rhetorical
strategies used in the passage - one or two is
    enough
  • Focus on the one or two rhetorical strategies
that you find are most prevalent and most
important to the argument made in the passage
  • For example, "the author uses irony," is an
incomplete claim, while "the authors use of
irony demonstrates that society holds men and
women to different standards" is a complete
    claim.
