What Can You Do?
  • Create a Neighborhood Watch for your
    neighborhood.
  • Use Target hardening on your property.

6
Neighborhood Watch
  • Communication is the key!
  • When neighbors talk to each other, crime is
    reduced.
  • Volunteer Neighborhood Watch Captains are needed
for each street (approximately 25 homes).
  • To start a Neighborhood Watch in Scottsdale, call
    480-312-2342.

7
Target Hardening
  • What does the exterior of your home say to a
    burglar?
  • The majority of property theft in Scottsdale
occurs in homes with open doors, windows and
    garage doors.
  • Start from the exterior of your home and
make things harder to enter or
    access.
  • Be aware of fire dangers emergency access.

8
Fences
  • Criminals like a clear escape.
  • Fences slow them down.
  • Prevents removal of heavy items.
  • We do NOT recommend placing glass, tar or carpet
tack strips on top of fence.
  • Police and fire often have to climb fences.

9
Landscaping
  • Sends strong signal to criminals.
  • Visibility is the key.
  • Bushes trimmed below window level.
  • Limbs trimmed up to 7 feet and away
    from the building.
  • Shrubs cut to 36 inches tall.
  • Plant thorny vegetation to dissuade access.

10
Exterior Lighting
  • Lighting has been proven to be the one deterrent
that can prevent property crime at night.
  • Exterior lighting should be placed high and
    point downward.
  • Motion sensor lights are
    inexpensive alternative.
  • Lights left on day and night
may indicate that the resident is not home.
  • Check for dark sky areas.
  • Light with a purpose!

11
Interior Lighting
  • Lights turning on and off during the early
evening hours makes it look like youre home.
  • Use timers with multiple settings.
  • Also put a radio or TV on a timer for noise.
  • Lights only on in the inside make it easy
for thieves to see your valuables

12
Security Screen Doors
  • Lessens the chances of the door being the point
    of entry for burglars.
  • New decorative models avoid the like a prison
    look.
  • White or off-white doors allow the person inside
to see out during the day, but the person out
    cant see in!

13
Strike Plates
  • The most important part of a lock.
  • Place on all entry doors.
  • Install with 2-3 inch screws.
  • extend into the framework of the
    building not just the trim
    molding.
  • Makes it harder to
    kick open.

14
Dead Bolt Locks
  • One inch throw
  • Anti-wrench collar
  • Single Cylinder are safer.

15
Eye Viewers
  • AKA peep holes.
  • Minimum is 160 degree.
  • Preferred is 180 degree.
  • New model designed for 210 degrees.

16
Windows
  • Keep windows closed and locked!
  • Use thumb locks to reinforce the lock.
  • Use a nail or pin to secure the windows.

17
Sliding Glass Doors
  • AKA Arcadia Doors.
  • Usually have a latch, not a lock.
  • Even when latched, it can still be lifted out of
    the track.
  • Secure by installing a pin lock in the bottom
    track.

18
Bars on Windows?
  • Can be mounted on windows to prevent entrance and
    exit.
  • Must have a break away feature to allow for
    exit during a fire.

19
Window Film
  • Alternative to bars or glass break sensors.
  • Film makes glass resist breakage.
  • Reduce amount of glare.
  • Maximizes energy efficiency.

20
Garage Doors

  • Valuables taken include golf clubs, mountain
    bicycles and power tools.

    Scottsdale are No Forced Entry.

Burglar Alarms
  • They are recommended if you are usually away from
your home during the day or for long periods of
    time.
  • Must be turned on to be effective!

    from reputable
    companies.
