Title: Aerobic versus Anaerobic

1
Aerobic versus Anaerobic
  • Robert, Branko, and Greg.

2
Aerobic
  • Most cellular respiration is done via this form
    of respiration.
  • Produces 36-38 ATP
  • Works with Glycolysis

3
Anaerobic
  • Respiration with a lack of oxygen
  • Produces just 2 ATP
  • Also works the Glycolysis.

4
Fermentation
  • Extension of Glycolysis
  • Alcohol fermentation and Lactic Acid fermentation

5
Alcohol Fermentation
  • Ethanol is the resulting product from the
    conversion of pyruvate
  • Then converts to acetaldehyde
  • NADH adds a hydrogen ion to acetaldehyde to
    change it to ethanol
  • the cell is able to regenerate the supply of NAD

6
Lactic Acid Fermentation
  • NADH reduces pyruvate directly
  • Used in the dairy industry to make cheese and
    yogurt

7
Fermentation and Respiration
  • Both yield a net gain of ATP
  • Glycolysis is used in both pathways
  • NAD is the oxidizing agent
  • Fermentation the final electron acceptor is
    either pyruvate or acetaldehyde
  • Respiration  the final acceptor is oxygen
  • More ATP is made when the citric acid cycle
    oxidizes pyruvate fermentation
