- Students will learn about the location of San
Ildefonso Pueblo. - Students will learn that art can be three
dimensional. - Students will learn pottery making vocabulary.
- Students will learn the steps in creating coil
pottery. - Students will create a coil pottery piece.
- Students will learn about a famous San Ildefonso
potter.
3- Procedures
- Students will be introduced to information
regarding the state of New Mexico and San
Ildefonso Pueblo. - Students will begin a website incorporating
information from this unit. - Students will create a publication sample such as
a newsletter, brochure, or postcard. - Students will learn about clay. They will see a
demonstration of the coil method of hand building
a pot- showing how the coils are made, how they
are joined together by scoring and applying slip,
and how different shapes are formed by the
placement of coils. Students will create a
powerpoint presentation focusing on coil pottery
construction. - Students will complete their website including
information about coil pottery construction.
4Printed Materials Textbooks, story books,
reference books/materials, photographs, map
outlines of New Mexico Supplies Native
American music CDs, Coil pottery, Clay,
newspaper, paper towels, non-stick surfaces for
pot building, Clay tools for smoothing pots,
aprons or long-sleeved shirts, spray bottles with
water, plastic cups (for slip), storage surfaces
for pots, trash bags, paper, plastic bags with
twist ties
