Major Beliefs Cont.
  • Creation story
  • Born a prince, the Buddha (then Siddhartha
Gautama) ventured outside the walls of the palace
and saw 4 what became known as the 4 sights(an
old man, a sick man, a corpse, and a holy man who
appeared to be at peace) which inspired him to
seek peace. He eventually decided to sit in
meditation until he was enlightened which he did
and spent his whole life professing his
    learning's.

9
Major Beliefs Cont.
  • How is one saved
  • The closest thing in Buddhism to being saved is
achieving nirvana which is essentially being free
from suffering. This can be done by extensive
    meditating.

  • Many people who claim a religion still follow
some of the practices of Buddhism so it could
technically exist with most if not all belief
systems. However, the Buddha said that other gods
were angels that may help good Buddhists but were
not a path to religion because they themselves
    need instruction.
  • Hinduism ( primary differences)
  • Rituals are discouraged
  • No caste system
  • The Buddha redefined the word "Brahman" which
    deviated from Hinduism

12

  • After death
  • One of 2 things happen to a person, either
reincarnated and reborn or person achieves
    Nirvana (similar to heaven)
