Scales

• A scale is a series of pitched notes arranged in
  order of height, from which melodies and
  harmonies can be made
• A MODE is very similar
• The particular notes for any scale will make a
  huge difference to the sound of the music
• Composers use scales and notes carefully to give
  their music a special and unique flavour

Pentatonic Scale

• The pentatonic scale is made up of 5 notes
• It is easy to work with as the notes will usually
  fit together in any order or combination

Modes

• Were developed in the Middle Ages for Christian
  Chants and hymn tunes
• Each mode had its own particular flavour
  according to the layout of tones and semitones
• They were named after areas of Ancient Greece
• Some names are Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian
