2What is Mechatronics
- Mechatronic System
- A machine combining electronic and mechanical
components with modern controls and
microprocessors - Examples Fingers Coffee
Soccer Drink filler - Walker
Fish ISS ops Satellite
docking - Mechatronics
- A subject studying the principles, analysis,
design, and operation of mechatronics systems - A field crossing the boundaries of traditional
engineering disciplines such as mechanical
engineering, electronic engineering, and computer
engineering - A new course just being added into engineering
curriculum recently years by many universities
3Main Topics
- Topics Approximate time
allocation - Sensors modeling and analysis 2 weeks
- Actuators and mechanical actuations 2 weeks
- Interfacing and signal conditioning 3 weeks
- Modeling and interface with Simulink LaView
1.5 week - Logical circuits and applications 3
weeks (incl. projects) - by Mr. Y. Tang of M-TEC
- Modeling of mixed dynamic systems 1 week
- Feedback motion control 1 week
- Overview of Robotics 1 week
- Design implementation (projects) Throughout
the semester

- Final exam 40
6Overview of a Mechatronic System
7Overview of a Mechatronic System
Configurations (b), (c), and (d) are automatic
systems
(a) Operator-in-the-Loop Configuration
(b) Computer-in-the-Loop Configuration
(c) DSP-in-the-Loop Configuration
(d) Embedded Computer-in-the-Loop Configuration
8Difference between Mechatronics and Robotics
- Mechatronics and Robotics are similar in the
sense that they both deal with - computer or microprocessor controlled machines.
However, there are differences - between the two subjects.
- Robotics system Mechatronics system
- - Focus on higher level SW and Control - Focus
on lower-level HW and SW - gt a robot must have mechatronics
components - - General-purpose machine - Usually
single-purpose machine - - Coordinated multiple degree-of-freedom -
Usually single dof or uncoordinated multi-dofs - - Dynamics, control theory, AI, CS, etc. -
Electronics, simple dynamics, mechanisms, etc. - - Complex math models - Simple math models
- - Sophisticated control systems - Simple PID
or logical controls - - High-level programming languages - Low-level
programming languages - - Graduate course in most universities - Senior
undergraduate course in most universities - The above distinguishing points are not absolute
and thus, for many people, robotics and - mechatronics mean the same thing.
9Course Project 1 Contest of Robot Fire Fighting
Objective Design and build a robot which can
find a burning candle in the maze and brow it out
within a minimum time. Contest Rules Per the
international robotics contest at the Trinity
College, New York. http//www.trincoll.edu/events/
robot/ Building Materials Lego Mindstorms
Robots Kit
How Five teams, three students per team.
Competition between teams.
10Course Project 2 Industrial Process Control
Objective Program and test PLC-based logical
controllers for manufacturing process control.
Instructor Mr. Y Tang M-TEC, NMSU
How Students will do the project in the
Automation Lab of M-TEC, NMSU.
