Isokinetic Marine Organism Sampler Overview
  • In the summer of 1999 the Florida State
    University Oceanography department was approved
for a research proposal by the US Navy. This
    proposal entailed the migration microorganisms.
The organisms migrate from the seabed, their
concentrations in the waters just above the
seabed increase relative to the time of day,
salinity, temperature and amount of light.
Collectively these organisms form a shallow
scattering layer. This layer has the potential
to interfere with certain naval operations.
  • Dr. David Thistle (FSU Oceanography Dept.)
    approached the FSU/FAMU mechanical engineering
department to aid in designing a Isokinetic
Marine Organism Sampler. The sampler will be
employed to measure the population densities
relative to their height from the bottom where
    they live.
