Title: Clouds!

Clouds!
  • Formation and Types

2
Cloud Formation
  1. Warm, moist air rises from the surface. As air
    rises, it cools
  2. At a certain height, air cools to the dew point
    and condensation begins
  3. Water vapor condenses on tiny particles in the
    air, forming a cloud!

6
Cirrus Clouds
  • Whispery and feathery clouds
  • Form at HIGH altitudes
  • Made of ice crystals!
  • Often indicate that a storm is on the way!

Cumulus Clouds
  • Look like fluffy, rounded piles of cotton
  • Cumulus Clouds that are not very tall indicate

Cumulonimbus
11
Stratus Clouds
  • Clouds that form in flat layers
  • Usually cover all or most of the sky and are a
    uniform, dull, gray color
  • When they thicken, they may produce drizzle,
    rain, or snow!

12
Stratus Clouds
13
Nimbostratus Clouds

Altitude and Clouds
  • Part of a clouds name may be based on height
  • Clouds between 2-6 kilometers have the prefix
    alto
  • Two main types Altocumulus and altostratus
  • Middle-Level clouds that are higher than regular
cumulus and stratus but lower than cirrus clouds

Fog
  • Clouds that are near the ground
  • Often forms when the ground cools at night after
    a warm, humid day
  • The ground cools the air just above the ground to
    the airs dew point
  • The next day the heat of the sun burns away the
fog as the water droplets evaporate
  • Common near bodies of water or low-lying marshy
    areas
