The Events of Resurrection Sunday

The following is one of several possible ways of
ordering the events of Resurrection Sunday. It
supposes that all of the women were not together
all of the time.

1. An angel comes rolls back the stone from the
tomb (Mt. 282).

2. Mary Magdalene comes before dawn while it is
still dark (Jn. 201) and finds the stone rolled
away.

3. Other women come at or after sunrise (Mk.
162 Lk. 241).

4. Mary Magdalene leaves to tell the apostles
(Jn. 202). She apparently does not know about
the angels. 4a. At some point Peter and John
start for the tomb Mary follows.

5. Angels (young men) appear to the other women
(Mk. 165 Lk. 244).

6. The women leave (Mt. 288 Mk. 168 Lk.
249). Some say nothing out of fear (Mk. 168).

7. Peter and John arrive at the tomb and find it
empty (Lk. 2412 Jn. 203-9).

8. Some women report the vision of angels to the
disciples (Lk. 2424).

9. Peter and John go home (Jn. 2010) and report
findings (Lk. 2424).

10. Mary Magdalene stays and sees Jesus (Jn.
2011-17 Mk. 169).

11. Cleopas and his companion leave (Lk.
2413-14).

12. Jesus appears to women (apparently the ones
who did not tell) (Mt. 289-10).Women,
including Mary Magdalene, go to tell the
disciples about the risen Lord (Mt. 2811 Mk.
1610-11 Jn. 2018).

The order of thirteen and fourteen is
uncertain.13. Jesus appears to Peter, who
reports it to the disciples (Lk. 2434).14.
Jesus appears to Cleopas and his companion (Lk.
2415-32 Mk. 1612)

15. Cleopas and his companion return to Jerusalem
to report it to the disciples (Lk. 2433) but are
not believed (Mk. 1613).

16. Jesus appears to the disciples in a locked
room that evening (Mk. 1614-18 Lk. 2436-43
Jn. 2019-23).He shows them his hands, feet,
and side and eats fish before them to prove he is
not a ghost. He gives Marks Great Commission.

Footnote John 2019 says Jesus appeared to them
on the evening of the first day of the week.
Note that the evening comes after the morning,
not before. The practical day was being used,
not the ceremonial day like the Sabbath.
