Title: Year 5

1
Maths Multiplication and division Identify
multiples and factors, find factor pairs of a
number and common factors of two numbers.
Multiply and divide numbers mentally drawing upon
known facts. Solve problems involving
multiplication and division using their knowledge
of factors and multiples, squares and cubes.
Addition and Subtraction Add and Subtract
numbers mentally with increasingly large numbers.
Add and subtract whole numbers with more than 4
digits. Use rounding to check answers to
calculations. Solve addition and subtraction
multistep problems in contexts, deciding which
operations to use. Geometry Know angles are
measured in degrees estimate and compare acute,
obtuse and reflex angles. Fractions Recognise
and convert between mixed and improper fractions
and write mathematical statements. Identify, name
and write equivalent fractions of a given
fraction, represented visually including 10ths
and hundredths. Compare and order fractions whose
denominators are all of the same number.
Science - Forces Explain that unsupported objects
fall towards the Earth because of the force of
gravity acting between the Earth and the falling
object. Identify the effects of air resistance,
water resistance and friction, that act between
moving surfaces. Recognise that some mechanisms,
including levers, pulleys and gears, allow a
smaller force to have a greater effect.
Literacy Reading Apply their growing knowledge of
root words, prefixes and suffixes. Read and
discuss a wide range of fiction.. Recommend books
to their peers giving reasons for choices. Ask
questions to improve understanding. Draw
inferences and justifying these with evidence
from the text. Retrieve, record and present
information from non-fiction. Writing Use
further prefixes and suffixes and understand how
to add them. Use a dictionary to check the
spelling and meaning of words. Identify the
audience for and purpose of writing. Select
appropriate grammar and vocab, understanding how
these change and enhance meaning. Assess the
effectiveness of their own and others writing.
Grammar and Punctuation Use commas to clarify
meaning and avoid ambiguity. Use relative
clauses beginning with who, which, where. Why,
whose, that etc. Use and understand grammatical
terminology in reading and writing.
PE Copy and repeat simple
actions in gymnastics, using coordination and
control. Take part in a conditioned game and
control the ball in an opposed situation.
Year 5 Autumn 1 2015 Force of the Anglo
Saxons Skills
History -Develop a chronological and secure
knowledge of British and world history. -Address
and devise historically valid questions. -Note
connections and contrasts over time.
RE What is the best way for a Hindu to show their
commitment to God?
Art/DT Produce creative work, exploring their
own ideas and recording their experiences.
Select from and use a wide range of tools to
perform practical tasks. Apply their
understanding of how to stiffen and strengthen
complex structures. Use mechanical systems in
products e.g. pulleys.
French Say and write the numbers 1
20. Name classroom objects. Understand classroom
instructions.
Music Appreciate and understand music from
different cultures and traditions.
Computing Search a database to research
information, using a range of search
techniques. Search for, interpret, check and qu
info, identify relevant/irrelevant info, present
in suitable format for chosen audience. Share
ideas using online methods.

Literacy Recount Summer holidays and A day in
the life of an Anglo Saxon. Persuasion Instructi
on How to build a. Non chronological
report Discussions
Science Compare and discuss how and why objects
of different mass fall at different speeds make
predictions and discuss forces behind them. Name
different types of forces.
Numeracy Continue to practice times tables up to
12 x 12. Problem solving in real life contexts.
Measure and estimate angles of real objects
around the school using previous knowledge to
estimate other angles.
PE Hockey Control
and pass the ball. Gymnastics controlled
movements using different parts of the body.
RE Learn the basic principles of the Hindu
faith. Research how they deomstrate their
commitment to God. Create a powerpoint to explan
to others about the Hindu faith.
