Title: Key Ideas
1Key Ideas
- I will be able to describe the relationship
between the frequency and wavelength of a wave. - I will understand why waves travel at different
speeds.
2Vocab Words
- Amplitude
- Wavelength
- Frequency
3Page 9
What are the amplitudes (in meters) of the waves
below?
- Amplitude A measure of how high crests are the
greater the amplitude, the more energy a wave
carries.
.75 m
1 m
4- Wavelength Distance from the top of one crest
to the top of the next crest, or from the bottom
of one trough to the bottom of the next trough.
51)Frequency is measured in Hertz 2) Speed divided
by distance. 3) Frequency related to the
wavelength
- Smaller wavelengths result in higher frequencies.
- Larger wavelength result in shorter frequency.
- Frequency Number of wavelengths passing a given
point per second. Measured in hertz. - - In other words, how many waves there are.
6This wave has a high/low frequency
This wave has a high/low frequency
7Wave Period
Wave period is just how much time it takes for
one cycle to pass and the units are always in
term of time. The faster a wave moves its
period becomes smaller
8- Color and pitch result from the wavelengths and
frequencies of light and sound.
Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Indigo
Violet
9- Wave Speed how fast a wave travels through a
medium. - Mechanical waves travel faster in a medium in
which atoms are packed closer together. - Electromagnetic waves travel faster in a medium
with fewer atoms in it.

10Labeled Waves
11Whiteboard Time
- 1) Find the speed of a wave with a wavelength of
5m and a frequency of 68 Hz. - 2)Find the wavelength of a soundwave traveling in
water with a speed of 1,470 m/s and a frequency
of 2,340 Hz. - 3) If Mr. Kelly does a cannonball and generates a
wave that a wavelength of3.2m and a frequency
of0.60 Hz, how fast is the wave moving? - 4) An earthquake wave travels at 5000m/sec and
has a wavelength of 417 m. What is its frequency?
