Cannulation

• Basically, the insertion of a hollow tube into
  the body, usually for the insertion of removal of
  a fluid.

Applied Cannulation

• Usually made of surgical steel or soft plastic,
  depending on placement and purpose.
• May be inserted intravenously, subcutaneously, or
  into body cavity such as nasal passage, or
  throat.
• May also be inserted into specific regions of the
  brain of rodents or other experimental animals.

How it works

• The tube allows for direct access to internal
  cavities or the blood supply.
• Health professionals may use cannulae to
  administer fluids (IV) or gasses (such as
  anesthetic orpure oxygen).
• May also be used to drain fluids or measure
  gaseous output.

Purpose

• Administration or removal of fluids/chemicals.
• What is the content of the internal fluid?
• What is the content or mixture of gasses upon
  exhalation?
• Experimentally how does the altered level of
  this chemical change behavior?

Examples of use

• Intravenous insertion of fluids, medications
• Intravenous removal of blood samples
• Experimentally administering specific proteins to
  the limbic system of cocaine addicted rats to
  study effects on memory.
