that has been shed on earth, from the blood of

will come upon this generation. (Matthew 2335-36

Jesus left the temple and was walking away when
his disciples came up to him to call his
attention to its buildings. "Do you see all these
things?" he asked. "I tell you the truth, not one
stone here will be left on another every one
will be thrown down." As Jesus was sitting on the
Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him
privately. "Tell us," they said, "when will this
happen, and what will be the sign of your coming
and of the end of the age?" (Matthew 241-3 NIV)

Josephus an eye witness
Caesar gave orders that they should demolish the
entire city and temple, but should leave many of
the towers standing and much of the wall that
enclosed the west side of the city. This wall
was spared to make protection for the Romans and
to demonstrate to future generations what kind of
city the valor of the Romans had conquered.

These Things the destruction of Jerusalem
Jesus left the temple and was walking away when
his disciples came up to him to call his
attention to its buildings. "Do you see all these
things?" he asked. "I tell you the truth, not one

will be thrown down." As Jesus was sitting on the

will be the sign of your coming and (3) of the
end of the age?" (Matthew 241-3 NIV)
Fulfillment at 3 different times or at the same
time
"Tell us, when will these things happen? And what
will be the sign that they are all about to be
fulfilled?" (Mark 134 NIV)
"Teacher," they asked, "when will these things
happen? And what will be the sign that they are
about to take place?" (Luke 217 NIV)
12
The sign of Jesus Coming is the same as the sign
of Jerusalems Destruction
"Tell us when will this happen, and what will be
the sign of your coming and of the end of the
age?" (Matthew 241-3 NIV)
"Teacher," they asked, "when will these things
happen? And what will be the sign that they are
about to take place?" (Luke 217 NIV)
13
Did the Lord Come in the same generation when the
temple was torn down?
"Tell us when will this happen, and what will be
the sign of your coming and of the end of the
age?" (Matthew 241-3 NIV)
All men will hate you because of me, but he who
stands firm to the end will be saved. When you
are persecuted in one place, flee to another. I
tell you the truth, you will not finish going
through the cities of Israel before the Son of
Man comes. (Matthew 1022-23 NIV)
14
Did the Lord Come in the same generation when the
temple was torn down?
"Tell us when will this happen, and what will be
the sign of your coming and of the end of the
age?" (Matthew 241-3 NIV)
For the Son of Man is going to come in his
Father's glory with his angels, and then he will
reward each person according to what he has done.
I tell you the truth, some who are standing here
will not taste death before they see the Son of
Man coming in his kingdom." (Matthew 1627-28
NIV)
15
The End of the Age
"Tell us when will this happen, and what will be
the sign of your coming and of the end of the
age?" (Matthew 243 NIV)
Tell us, when shall these things be? and what
shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end
of the world? (Matthew 243 King James Version)
16
The End of the Age
"Tell us when will this happen, and what will be
the sign of your coming and of the end of the
age?" (Matthew 243 NIV)
Then Christ would have had to suffer many times
since the creation of the world. But now he has
appeared once for all at the end of the ages to
do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself.
Just as man is destined to die once, and after
that to face judgment, (Hebrews 926-27 NIV)

Gods Covenant with Israel
But God found fault with the people and said
"The time is coming, declares the Lord, when I
will make a new covenant with the house of Israel
and with the house of Judah. It will not be like
the covenant I made with their forefathers when I
took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt,
because they did not remain faithful to my
covenant, and I turned away from them, declares
the Lord. By calling this covenant "new," he
has made the first one obsolete and what is
obsolete and aging will soon disappear. (Hebrews
88-13 NIV)

Jesus answered "Watch out that no one deceives
you. For many will come in my name, claiming, 'I
am the Christ, 'and will deceive many. You will
hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it
that you are not alarmed. Such things must
happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will
rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.
There will be famines and earthquakes in various
places. All these are the beginning of birth
pains. (Matthew 244-8 NIV)
Did this happen in the first century?

Josephus eyewitness and historian
The land was over run with magicians, seducers,
and imposters, who drew the people after them in
multitudes into secluded places and deserts to
see signs and miracles promised by the power of
God
64-68 A.D.
Now for some time a man named Simon had practiced
sorcery in the city and amazed all the people of
Samaria. He boasted that he was someone great,
and all the people, both high and low, gave him
their attention and exclaimed, "This man is the
divine power known as the Great Power." (Acts
89-10 NIV)
23
Josephus Eyewitness and Historian
There was another body of wicked men gotten
together, not so impure in their actions, but
more wicked in their intentions, which laid waste
the happy state of the city. These were men who
deceived and deluded the people under pretense of
Divine inspiration, but were for seeking
innovations and changes of the government and
these prevailed with the multitude to act like
madmen, and went before them into the wilderness,
as pretending that God would there show them the
signals of liberty. But there was a false
prophet that did the Jews more mischief than the
former he was a cheat, and pretended to be a
prophet also and got 30,000 men that were deluded
by him
24
Some time ago Theudas appeared, claiming to be
somebody, and about four hundred men rallied to
him. He was killed, all his followers were
dispersed, and it all came to nothing. (Acts 536
NIV)
When Fadus was procurator of Judea, an imposter
called Theudas persuaded a vast crowd to take
their belongings and follow him the River Jordan
for he claimed to be a prophet, and promised to
divide the river by his command and provide an
easy crossing. A great many people were deceived
by this talk. Fadus did not allow them to enjoy
their folly but sent the calvary against them.
These attacked them without warning, killed many,
and took many alive, capturing Theudas himself,
whose head they cut off and conveyed to Jerusalem

"Then you will be handed over to be persecuted
and put to death, and you will be hated by all
nations because of me. At that time many will
turn away from the faith and will betray and hate
each other, and many false prophets will appear
and deceive many people. Because of the increase
of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold,
but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.
(Matthew 249-13 NIV)
And Saul was there, giving approval to his death.
On that day a great persecution broke out against
the church at Jerusalem, and all except the
apostles were scattered throughout Judea and
Samaria. (Acts 81 NIV)

of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold,
but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.
(Matthew 249-13 NIV)
Do your best to come to me quickly, for Demas,
because he loved this world, has deserted me and
has gone to Thessalonica. (2 Timothy 49-11 NIV)

I know that after I leave, savage wolves will
come in among you and will not spare the flock.
Even from your own number men will arise and
distort the truth in order to draw away disciples
after them. (Acts 2029-30 NIV)

And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached
in the whole world as a testimony to all nations,
and then the end will come. (Matthew 2414 NIV)

Understanding the Bible use of whole world and
all nations
Now it came about in those days that a decree
went out from Caesar Augustus, that a census be

Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and
Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts
of Libya near Cyrene visitors from Rome (both
Jews and converts to Judaism) Cretans and
Arabs-- we hear them declaring the wonders of God
in our own tongues!" (Acts 29-11 NIV)

And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached
in the whole world as a testimony to all nations,
and then the end will come. (Matthew 2414 NIV)
Was the gospel preached to all nations in the
first century?
First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for
all of you, because your faith is being reported
all over the world. (Romans 18 NIV)
according to the commandment of the eternal God,
has been made known to all the nations, leading
to obedience of faith (Romans 1625-26 NASB)

be cut off and have nothing, and the people of
the prince who is to come will destroy the city
and the sanctuary. And its end will come with a
flood even to the end there will be war
desolations are determined. "And he will make a
firm covenant with the many for one week, but in
the middle of the week he will put a stop to
sacrifice and grain offering and on the wing of
abominations will come one who makes desolate,
even until a complete destruction, one that is
decreed, is poured out on the one who makes
desolate." (Daniel 926-27 NASB)

The Greatest Period of Tribulation
For then there will be great distress, unequaled
from the beginning of the world until now-- and
never to be equaled again. If those days had not
been cut short, no one would survive, but for the
sake of the elect those days will be shortened.
(Matthew 2421-22 NIV)

All the calamities which have befallen any
nation from the beginning of the world to now
were but small in comparison with those of the
Jews

"At that time Michael, the great prince who
protects your people, will arise. There will be a
time of distress such as has not happened from
the beginning of nations until then. But at that
time your people-- everyone whose name is found
written in the book-- will be delivered. (Daniel

"It will be for a time, times and half a time.
When the power of the holy people has been
finally broken, all these things will be
completed." (Daniel 127 NIV)

The Great Tribulation of 66-70 A.D.
  • The Jewish Rebellion, 1,000,000 killed in

  • Three Jewish factions inside the city fighting
each other while the Romans surrounded the city
and killed or made slaves of anyone who left.
  • Those who tried to desert the city were killed by
    their fellow Jews
  • Jews in every city of the Roman Empire were
killed or persecuted (Prediction in speech of
Agrippa II in 66 A.D. recorded by Josephus)

48
The Great Tribulation of 66-70 A.D.
  • Example, the day of Jewish rebellion saw every
Jew murdered in Caesarea (the Roman capital of
    Judea)
  • A few days later 50,000 were killed in one
    stadium in Alexandria, Egypt
  • Three civil wars in Rome at the same time as
Jewish rebellion Romans fighting Romans for

  • Nero the emperor killed members of the senate
    and his own family
  • Four Emperors of Rome either committed suicide or
were assassinated within a few months

Josephus eyewitness and historian
A false prophet was the occasion of these
peoples destruction, who had made a public
proclamation in the city that very day, that God
had commanded them to get up upon the temple, and
that they should be given miraculous signs of
their deliverance. Now, there was then a great
number of false prophets used by the tyrants
(zealots) that they should wait for a
miraculous deliverance of God
52
From the death of Herod the Great .. To the
destruction of Jerusalem, the Jewish history is
filled with names of false Christs and false
prophets who deceived both the Jews and the
Samaritans. None appeared BEFORE this period and
not more than one for five or six centuries AFTER
IT.

Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but
test the spirits to see whether they are from
God, because many false prophets have gone out
into the world. This is how you can recognize the
Spirit of God Every spirit that acknowledges
that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from
God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge
Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the
antichrist, which you have heard is coming and
even now is already in the world. (1 John 41-3

will be shaken. At that time they will see the
Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great
glory. When these things begin to take place,
stand up and lift up your heads, because your
redemption is drawing near." He told them this
parable "Look at the fig tree and all the trees.
When they sprout leaves, you can see for
yourselves and know that summer is near. Even so,
when you see these things happening, you know
that the kingdom of God is near. "I tell you the

"Immediately after the distress of those days

How are we to understand this language?
61
Wail, for the day of the LORD is near it will
come like destruction from the Almighty. Because
of this, all hands will go limp, every man's
heart will melt. Terror will seize them, pain and
anguish will grip them they will writhe like a
woman in labor. They will look aghast at each
other, their faces aflame. See, the day of the
LORD is coming--a cruel day, with wrath and
fierce anger-- to make the land desolate and
destroy the sinners within it. The stars of
heaven and their constellations will not show
their light. The rising sun will be darkened and
the moon will not give its light. I will punish
the world for its evil, the wicked for their
sins. I will put an end to the arrogance of the
haughty and will humble the pride of the
ruthless. I will make man scarcer than pure gold,
more rare than the gold of Ophir. Therefore I
will make the heavens tremble and the earth will
shake from its place at the wrath of the LORD
Almighty, in the day of his burning anger.

Out of one of them came another horn, which
started small but grew in power to the south and
to the east and toward the Beautiful Land. It
grew until it reached the host of the heavens,
and it threw some of the starry host down to the
earth and trampled on them. (Daniel 89-10 NIV)

people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your young men will see visions, your old men

At the ascension Jesus went up in the clouds to
the right hand of God authority was given to him
"In my vision at night I looked, and there before
me was one like a son of man, coming with the
clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of
Days and was led into his presence. He was given
authority, glory and sovereign power all
peoples, nations and men of every language
worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting
dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom
is one that will never be destroyed. (Daniel

THE LORD COMING IN CLOUDS?
Is this what we picture when we think of the Lord
coming in clouds? Maybe we need to study our
Bible more.
85
Then the earth shook and quaked And the
foundations of the mountains were trembling And
were shaken, because He was angry. Smoke went up
out of His nostrils, And fire from His mouth
devoured Coals were kindled by it. He bowed the
heavens also, and came down With thick darkness
under His feet. And He rode upon a cherub and
flew And He sped upon the wings of the wind. He
made darkness His hiding place, His canopy around
Him, Darkness of waters, thick clouds of the
skies. From the brightness before Him passed His
thick clouds, Hailstones and coals of fire. The
LORD also thundered in the heavens, And the Most
High uttered His voice, Hailstones and coals of
fire. And He sent out His arrows, and scattered
them, And lightning flashes in abundance, and
routed them. Then the channels of water appeared,
And the foundations of the world were laid bare
At Thy rebuke, O LORD, At the blast of the breath
of Thy nostrils. (Psalms 187-15 NASB)
The Bible paints a much different picture of his
coming
86

Clouds and thick darkness surround Him
Righteousness and justice are the foundation of
His throne. Fire goes before Him, And burns up
His adversaries round about. His lightnings lit
up the world The earth saw and trembled. (Psalms
972-4 NASB)
87
THE LORD COMING IN CLOUDS
The oracle concerning Egypt. Behold, the LORD is
riding on a swift cloud, and is about to come to
Egypt The idols of Egypt will tremble at His
presence, And the heart of the Egyptians will
melt within them. (Isaiah 191 NASB)
88

"For the day is near, Even the day of the LORD is
near It will be a day of clouds, A time of doom
for the nations. "And a sword will come upon
Egypt, And anguish will be in Ethiopia, When the
slain fall in Egypt, They take away her wealth,
And her foundations are torn down. (Ezekiel
303-4 NASB)
89
"And when I extinguish you, I will cover the
heavens, and darken their stars I will cover the
sun with a cloud, And the moon shall not give its
light. "All the shining lights in the heavens I
will darken over you And will set darkness on
your land," Declares the Lord GOD. (Ezekiel
327-8 NASB)
For thus says the Lord GOD, "The sword of the
king of Babylon shall come upon you. "By the
swords of the mighty ones I will cause your
multitude to fall all of them are tyrants of the
nations, And they shall devastate the pride of
Egypt, And all its multitude shall be destroyed.
(Ezekiel 3211-12 NASB)
90
Then I said, "Ah, Lord GOD! Surely Thou hast
utterly deceived this people and Jerusalem,
saying, 'You will have peace' whereas a sword
touches the throat." In that time it will be said
to this people and to Jerusalem, "A scorching
wind from the bare heights in the wilderness in
the direction of the daughter of My people--not
to winnow, and not to cleanse, a wind too strong
for this--will come at My command now I will
also pronounce judgments against them. "Behold,
he goes up like clouds, And his chariots like the
whirlwind His horses are swifter than eagles.
Woe to us, for we are ruined!" (Jeremiah 410-13
NASB)
91
Blow a trumpet in Zion, And sound an alarm on My
holy mountain! Let all the inhabitants of the
land tremble, For the day of the LORD is coming
Surely it is near, A day of darkness and gloom, A
day of clouds and thick darkness. As the dawn is
spread over the mountains, So there is a great
and mighty people There has never been anything
like it, Nor will there be again after it To the
years of many generations. (Joel
21-2 NASB)
92
Near is the great day of the LORD, Near and
coming very quickly Listen, the day of the LORD!
In it the warrior cries out bitterly. A day of
wrath is that day, A day of trouble and distress,
A day of destruction and desolation, A day of
darkness and gloom, A day of clouds and thick
darkness, A day of trumpet and battle cry,
Against the fortified cities And the high corner
towers. (Zephaniah 114-16 NASB)

  • Announced festivals (Ps 813)
  • Preparation for battle (Eze 714)
  • A warning and alarm (Eze 333 Joel 21)

Our Gathering Together to Him

days THE SUN WILL BE DARKENED, AND THE MOON WILL
NOT GIVE ITS LIGHT, AND THE STARS WILL FALL from
the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be
shaken, and then the sign of the Son of Man will
appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the
earth will mourn, and they will see the SON OF
MAN COMING ON THE CLOUDS OF THE SKY with power
and great glory. "And He will send forth His
angels with A GREAT TRUMPET and THEY WILL GATHER
TOGETHER His elect from the four winds, from one
end of the sky to the other. (Matthew 2429-31)

north and from the west, "Lift up your eyes
and look around All of them gather together,
they come to you. As I live," declares the LORD,
"You shall surely put on all of them as jewels,
and bind them on as a bride. "For your waste and
desolate places, and your destroyed land--Surely
now you will be too cramped for the inhabitants,
And those who swallowed you will be far away.
"The children of whom you were bereaved will yet
say in your ears, 'The place is too cramped for
me Make room for me that I may live here.'
