Title: Engineering Diploma

1
Engineering Diploma Level 2 Unit 4 Producing
Engineering Solutions
This unit will give you the opportunity to
undertake your own project, producing an
engineered product or carrying out an engineering
service such as maintenance, installation or
commissioning.
As part of your duties, you will have to identify
what you need to do and plan the process. You
will need to take into account the machinery or
tools needed and select the materials required.
When you have finished, you will have to carry
out an inspection.
2
L2 U4 Learning Outcomes
  • Understand health and safety procedures,
standards and risk assessment in engineering
    activities
  • Be able to plan for an engineering product or
    services
  • Be able to select suitable materials, parts or
components for an engineered product or service
  • Be able to use processes, tools and equipment to
make an engineered product or carry out a
    service
  • Be able to apply inspection techniques to the
    engineered product or service

Engineering theme
  • The engineering theme for this module will be
    based around pneumatics technology
  • Pneumatics is the use of pressurised air to
    operate machines
  • You will also gain an insight into mechanical and
    electronics systems
  • You will asked to set up an electro-pneumatic
    sorting system
  • You may also be asked to make a safety guard or a
    parts counting system
  • A large part of this unit will involve looking at
health and safety, risk assessments and planning

Applications of pneumatics
  • Automated Production machinery
  • Food production and packaging
  • Transportation systems
  • Robotics
  • Dentistry
  • Mining

The tasks for this unit are based around an
electro-pneumatic system for sorting parts.
Task 1 Carry out a health and safety analysis and
risk assessment for pneumatic system and write a
short report.
  • Your report must cover the following
  • What are the health and safety procedures and
    standards that are appropriate?
  • Why could a risk assessment be necessary prior to
    the activity?
  • Describe the responsibilities of yourself and
others in relation to the engineering activity.
  • What are the substances or processes where a risk
assessment will be necessary for the engineering
activity that you are about to carry out? State
    the reasons for this.
  • Compare the health and safety responsibilities of
yourself and others when working on the
engineering activity that you have been given.
  • Carry out a risk assessment identifying the
hazards and risks, stating whether the risk is
acceptable and how it can be controlled.

Task 2 Produce a plan for the engineering
activity that you are required to carry out which
includes the following materials or components,
tools and equipment sequence of operations. Write
a short report.
  • Your report must cover the following
  • Explain the reason for using the sequence of
operations and the choice of tools and equipment
    for your engineering activity plan.
  • Once you have used your plan, identify and
suggest possible improvements. Record and explain
your suggestions and their intended results.
  • Decide how you will inspect and test the system
to decide if it is functioning correctly.

Task 3 Use the plan to identify parts and
components for producing the system. Follow the
plan to build the system. Select and use
processes, tools and equipment in a safe manner.
  • Your report must cover the following
  • Explain and justify choices.
  • Inspect the system to check it complies with
    plan.
  • Record key measurements and compare results with
    the plan to assess compliance.
  • Evaluate your use of inspection techniques and
    the results obtained.
  • Explain what you have learnt during the process
and what might be done differently.
