A. RELIGIOUS MOTIVATION TO LEAVE ENGLAND

• Martin Luther (1517, Wittenberg)

• John Calvins theology dominates in New England.

• Ideas are hitting England when King Henry VIII
  breaks ties to the Catholic Church (1530)

King Henry wanted to divorce his wife Catherine
and marry Anne Boleyn (he needed a son) He formed
the Church of England (Anglican Church) and made
himself head of the Church
Puritans-wanted purification of the new

A small group known as separatists left England
and went to Holland. They felt their children
were becoming too Dutch and wanted to find a new
haven and sought to establish a settlement in
the New World.

When they made the journey, they became known
as Pilgrims

His tribe had been wiped out by disease while he
was gone
He taught them how to plant corn
SQUANTO worked out peace treaty between the
