• 28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now
  finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), I
  thirst. 29 A jar full of sour wine stood there,
  so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a
  hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. 30 When
  Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, It is
  finished, and he bowed his head and gave up his
  spirit.

• Mark 1045 45 For even the Son of Man came not to
  be served but to serve, and to give his life as a
  ransom for many.
• 1 Timothy 256 5 For there is one God, and there
  is one mediator between God and men, the man
  Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for
  all, which is the testimony given at the proper

Ransomed from what?

• 31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed
  him, If you abide in my word, you are truly my
  disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and
  the truth will set you free. 33 They answered
  him, We are offspring of Abraham and have never
  been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say,
  You will become free? 34 Jesus answered them,
  Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who
  practices sin is a slave to sin.

How does sin enslave?

• Galatians 48 Formerly, when you did not know
  God, you were enslaved to those that by nature
  are not gods.
• Why do we choose wrong when we know right?
• If my highest value (idol) is X then I will
• sin to obtain X.
• suffer anxiety if X is threatened.
• sin to keep X once I possess it.

Consequences of Slavery

• Idols always give less than they promise.
• Idols always take more than they promise.
• Sooner or later we want deliverance (freedom).
• We say, God deliver me from X. But pull of
  X too strong.
• We desire deliverance but not the DELIVERER.

Aware of Need? 3 Paths

1. No Hope SIN is large / grace is small
2. Hope in Reform sin is small / grace is small
3. Hope in Gospel SIN is large / GRACE is larger

What did Jesus proclaim?
