Hearing Loss and Deaf Culture

2
  • The ears intricate and delicate structure makes
    it vulnerable to damage.
  • Problems with the mechanical system that conducts
sound waves to the cochlea cause conduction
    hearing loss.
  • If the eardrum is punctured the ears ability to
    conduct vibrations diminishes.

3
  • Damage to the cochleas hair cell receptors or
their associated nerves can cause the more common
    (nerve deafness).

4
Cochlear Implants
  • A Cochlear Implant is a sort of bionic ear.
  • Cochlear Implants transmit electrical impulses to
    the brain.
  • It helps deaf children hear some sounds and to
    learn to use spoken language.

5
  • Deaf people have a complete language and its
    called sign language.
  • Being deaf enhances other senses which gives them
    an advantage.

6
  • The latest cochlear implants can restore hearing
for most adults but only when the adult brain
learned to process sound during childhood.

7
  • The use of cochlear implant is highly debated.
  • Some want their child to get the experience of
sound and to talk and get the job done
    immediately.
  • Some dont want to use the implants because the
N.A.D argues that being deaf is not a disability
and the deaf person is not disabled.
  • N.A.D-National Association of the Deaf

8
  • American Sign Language have no relationship with
    any other language except English.
  • Sign language has his own grammar, syntax, and
    semantics.
  • Those who learn ASL during childhood have
difficulty later learning to read and write.
  • Some schools help deaf kids become bilingual in
both sign, spoken and written language
