Title: STATIC DISCHARGE

1
STATIC DISCHARGE
2
Static Discharge
  • When there is a big difference between charges in
two nearby objects, electrons will jump (static
discharge) from the more negative object to the
    less negative object.

3
Why we feel shocks
  • Water molecules in the air collide with you
during the humid months and take away some of
that electrical charge as they collide with us.
  • Dry winter weather ? less water molecules in air

Safety
During storms, the water molecules in the clouds
become charged when they collide with each other
(friction). The negative charges (electrons)
move to the bottom of the cloud. The negative
charges in the cloud induce charge on the earth
by making the electrons in the ground (earth) go
further down. Positive molecules and atoms are
left at the surface of the earth. When there is
a big enough difference between the clouds
negative charges and the earths positive
charges, the electrons from the ground jump
(static discharge) from the cloud to the earth.
The light you see goes up from the earth to the
clouds on the same path.
