• Eighteenth Century 1798-1832 (later moved to US
  called Transcendentalism)
• Time of Revolution-particularly the French
  Revolution proved influential to the artists of
  the period.
• Romanticism reacted negatively to the excesses of
  industrialism-luddite
• Reaction against Neoclassicism with the respect
  for rules, the individuals place in society,
  veneration of Greek and Roman traditions
