AHSAABALL HANDLING
2
Ball-Handling
  • Ball handling JUDGMENT is perhaps the most
important officiating skill for a volleyball
    referee.
  • Ball handling requires a referee having a grasp
of ball handling rules and an eye to make
    judgment calls

3
Ball-Handing
  • Players are allowed to use ANY part of their body
rather than an implement to play the ball, as
long as the contact is legal.

4
What is Legal Contact?
  • Legal Contact can be
  • Made with ANY part of the body.
  • Must be hit cleanly
  • Must NOT be CAUGHT or THROWN
  • CANNOT visibly come to rest or involve prolonged
    contact

5
Quotes to Remember
  • It does not matter what the player or the ball
does before the contact is made or after contact
    is completed.
  • What happens while the player is in contact with
    the ball doesnt matter.
  • Remember! UGLY is not a ball handling violation

6
  • Unorthodox movement
  • Poor technique during the contact
  • Bad body position
  • Contact sound
  • And Please not BALL SPINNING
  • One must have a grasp of RULE
  • REMEMBER NONE OF THESE ARE CRITERIA FOR BALL
    HANDLING VIOLATIONS

7
Techniques
  • One should IGNORE how the ball handler is
    positioned to the ball.
  • ZONE in on ONLY the players body parts making
    actual contact with the ball.
  • EVALUATE what happens during the entire contact

8
Techniques to Practice
  • The Three Rs
  • READY!
  • READ the ball handling action
  • REACT to whistle a violation

9
Ball Handling
  • Techniques to practice
  • Call only what you see.
  • Dont guess
  • If you get screened from the action, get visual
help from the second referee (R2).
  • The second (R2) DOES NOT whistle ball handling
    FAULTS!
  • (Always work as a TEAM)

10
CONSISTENCY
  • A referee is expected to call violations on all
blatant or obvious ball handling errors.
  • Teams and players will adapt to whether its
called tight or loose, as long its CONSISTENCY.
  • Set your standard to the skill level or
    competition level.
  • Whatever STANDARD YOU START the match with
STICK TO IT for the entire match

11
Ball Handling Tips
  • Do not follow a moving ball
  • ZOOM forward with rapid eye where the next
    contact might occur
  • During an attack quickly shift your view from
    attacker to net to defense
  • Observe all of the hitters attack

12
  • When ball passes blocker find defensive player
who will be playing the ball
  • Get there before the ball!

13
Review
  • Good officials continue to be students of the
    game.
  • The importance of knowing and identifying legal
contact is using your judgment, knowledge,
    techniques, and consistency.
  • Officials must understand coaches strategies.

14
  • Questions to ask YOURSELF
  • Was the ball caught or thrown?
  • Did the ball have prolonged contact?
  • Did the ball visibly come to rest on a body part
    (s)?
  • Was the ball over controlled or under controlled?
