What are games ?
  • Language games are not activities mainly aimed to
break the ice between students or to kill time.
Byrne (1995) gave the definition to games as a
form of play governed by rules. They should be
enjoyed and fun. They are not just a diversion, a
break from routine activities, but a way of
getting the learner to use the language in the
course of the game. Similarly, Jill Hadfield
(1990) defined games as an activity with rules,
a goal and an element of fun. (??????????????????

How to choose a game to use?
  • Teachers should first consider the level of the
game to fit their students language level.
    ?????????????
  • Teachers should choose the game that fits the
purposes of that class or the content.
    ?????????????
  • teachers should consider students'
    characteristics.
  • ???????????
  • They should also consider when the game should be
    used. ????????????

10
Types of games ?????
  • Two types of games in the classroom.
  • One kind stresses accuracy which is called
    language-focused games ?????????
  • and the other kind stresses fluency, which is
    called communication-focused games. ???????

11
Task 2
  • Make a list of the games you know and think about
which are language-focused games and which are
    communication-focused games.

12
Differences of the two types of games
  • Language-focused games are developed to reinforce
    specific grammar points (vocabulary and
    structure, etc.) ???????????
  • Communication-focused games are designed to
encourage the creative and spontaneous use of
    language. ?????????????????????????

13
  • In language-focused games teacher has more
control in terms of what language point is
    practiced, while in communication-focused games
it is hard to predict what specific language
    learners might use.
  • ???????????????????????????????????????
  • The language requirement of the
communication-focused games is more advanced than
that of language-focused ones, because these
games are intended on the overall language
    ability of learners.
  • ????????????????????,??,?????????????????????

14
  • Generally communication-focused will come later
    than the language-focused ones.
  • However, this does not mean that
    communication-focused games are better than
language-focused ones only because they are more
    advanced.
  • When new language points are introduced
language-focused games are very necessary before
more challenging activities could be successfully
    carried out.
