on the land

15 July 1918. Much work in the district is
being done by women-labourers. WAAC girls were
driving heavy motor lorries about Chelmsford.
Practically every bakers cart and nearly all
other tradesmens delivery vans are now driven by
women. 23 August 1918. Quite recently one of
the WAAC drivers was driving Col. Cuthbert Buckle
at a furious pace and ran the car into the ditch.
The colonel had to get out and go for men to haul
the car out. The WAACs apology for the accident
consisted in saying What a silly place to put a
