BOLL WEEVIL

• By 1918 (end of WWI), boll weevil had reached
  GA
• Originally from Mexico ? migrated up through
  Texas in late 1890s
• Its larvae hatched in the developing cotton balls
  and destroyed them
• In Greene County, GA
• 1919 20,000 bales
  1922 333 bales
• Powder insecticide used to kill boll weevil.
  Drought slowed down numbers too.

The Great Migration

• The massive migration of Southern blacks to the
  North for jobs in factories
• Begins during WWI because so many white males
  are off fighting that we need people to fill
  their jobs
• Blacks also left South due to Jim Crow Laws and
  the revival of the KKK in 1915.
• In GA 1900 1/2 pop. black
• 1930 1/3 pop. black and in 1970 ¼ pop. black

DROUGHT

• Slowed down the spread of boll weevils but
  ruined most of GAs crops
• Over 375,000 GA farmers left GA between
  1920-1925. The number of farms fell from about
  310,000 to 250,000.
• When farms failed, farmers couldnt repay loans
  they owed to banks and farm-related businesses
  also suffered.
