  • Origin
  • William C. Morgan of Springfield College in
    Massachusetts devised the rules of volleyball in
    1895.
  • Etiquette
  • The winner of a coin toss will choose serve or
    side of court to play.
  • Players line up on end lines then run opposite
    directions toward the net and shake hands under
    the net before the start of the game.

RULES OF PLAY
  • Play to 25 win by 2
  • 6 players for each team 3 in front 3 in back
  • At the time of the serve all players must be in
    their position
  • Players will serve out of RIGHT BACK positions
    and may serve from anywhere behind the endline
  • Each team has 3 hits to return the ball.
  • NO player may play the ball twice in succession
    unless the first play was a block.
  • Points will be scored any time a mistake is made
  • Side out is the term used to signify loss of
    serve.
  • A ball that lands on the side or end line will be
    considered in court and playable.
  • Front row players must keep both feet on the
    ground after a serve. ( NO BLOCKING OR SPIKING A
    SERVE)

  • No back court player may make contact with the
    ball above the net in front of the 10ft. Line.

  • A player may not come into contact with the net
    in any way.
  • The ball may touch the net and still be played on
    the serve and off regular play.
  • Games are played in matches you must win 3 out
    of 5 games to win a match.
  • The Height of the net for Women is 74 1/8
  • Men 7

TERMS
  • Forearm Pass/ Bump- pass using forearms designed
    to get a set
  • Set- 2 hand overhead pass to a hitter for a spike
  • Spike- hard driven overhand usually hit above the
    net
  • Block- using 1 or 2 hands to keep ball from
    corssing the net
  • Lift- illegal hit, making longer than mometary
    contact with the ball
  • Point- given to winner of the rally or volley
  • Side out- loss of serve
  • Libero- defensive specialist, may go in for any
    back court player signified by wearing different
    uniform.
