  • A verb can express THREE things!
  • 1. Action (Its what you do.)
  • 2. Condition (verbs such as look, smell,
    feel, sound, taste, grow, appear, become,
    seem, remain)
  • 3. State-of-being (the 8 forms of the verb
    to be)

  • The state-of-being verbs, as previously stated,
    are the 8 forms of the verb to be.
  • In most languages, we can conjugate English verbs
    into their different forms
  • Present Tense (right now) Past Tense (yesterday)

  • Identify the verbs in the following sentences.
    Remember to look for a word that could be made
    into an infinitive!

  • Verbs can also come in clusters. These clusters
    are called verb phrases.
  • Verb phrasesauxiliary verbs main verbs
  • Auxiliary verbs is just a fancy name for
    helping verbs.
  • Common auxiliary verbs include
  • can could, will would, shall should, may might
    must, have had has, do did does

  • A common auxiliary verbs mistake is to mistake
    of and have.
  • Of Preposition preceding a noun and pronoun
  • Have Main verb (to possess) or auxiliary verb
    forming a perfect verb tense
  • Using the context of each sentence, correctly
    fill in the blank with of or have.
  • 1. We should __________ arrived on time. Some

Warning! Warning!
  • Sometimes, words with verb endings (ing, s, ed,
    etc.) dont act like verbs. They act like other
    parts of speech. These are called verbals.
  • There are three kinds of verbals
  • 1) Gerunds Words that end in ing but function
    as a noun
  • Ex Jogging is my favorite activity.
  • 2) Participles Words that look like verbs but
    function as an adjective
  • Ex The swimming pool is freezing.
  • Ex The cracked windows let in cold air.
  • 3) Infinitives Verbs that are preceded with
    to and function as a noun, adjective, or
    adverb
  • Ex To succeed, one needs to practice!
  • Remember, examine not just the word, but HOW IT
    FUNCTIONS!

So why does it matter if I know what a stinkin
verb is anyway?
  • 1. EVERY complete sentence needs a verb!
  • For example Well-dressed and kind.
  • (No verb, and therefore makes no sense!)
  • She is well-dressed and kind.
  • Dudley the ball to the pitcher.
  • (No verb! What did he DO with the ball?)
  • Dudley tossed the ball to the pitcher.

Verbs in Writing
  • 2. Try to use ACTION verbs when you can. Dont
    depend on the forms of to be excessively.
    Theyre not as vivid, visual, or effective.
    (Lazy verbs)
  • For example She was nice.
  • (Zzzzz.)
  • She helped the old woman across the street
    and bought lemonade from a neighbor childs
    stand.
  • (This SHOWS us that she is nice, and is
    therefore more visual and convincing.)

  • 3. Avoid extensive verb phrases when possible.
    Be concise! (Less is more! Words are !)
  • Your writing can become wordy, which muddles
    meaning.
  • For example The ball was thrown by
    Leonard.
  • Leonard threw the ball.
  • The test was taken by the cadet.
  • The cadet took the test.
